Fantastische Erfahrung: This is a large and beautiful art museum. And it's free!! Can't beat that. They've got a fantastic cafe with delicious food, so definitely visit over lunch time.

Fantastische Erfahrung: Ehat a wonderful museum for the city. There is no charge to see the permanent collection & most of the temporary exhibitions. We enjoyed the Monet in Focus before three of the paintings head back to France. The illustrations for Fairy Tales & Fables were very interesting. We had a lovely lunch in the restaurant then headed upstairs for the Seven Jewelled Mountains & the Chinese porcelain. Wow! What a great museum. The perfect size; not too overwhelming.

Positive Erfahrung: Its exhibition has the depth of the Met in New York City but in smaller volume. We also loved the large atrium and its cafe selection (with sophisticated flavor, unlike other museums). The free admission is another plus.

Fantastische Erfahrung: I had a bonus day due to traveling for work and was thrilled to be able to see all but one wing and the gift shop in the 4 hours I had today. This is a MUST SEE. Crazy cool interactive installations, Monet, Manet, Rembrandt, Picasso, Pollack - all the classics! Fantastic contemporary art, photography, medieval installations and more. I'll be back every time I visit Cleveland!

Fantastische Erfahrung: Did not know what to expect from Clevelands primary art museum but, every aspect of a visit was exceptional! From the drive approaching the building with its sexy addition (see photos), to the wonderfully helpful ticket counter, to the special exhibits (don’t miss Seven Mountains or Monet), to the cafe (home made flavorful lunch dishes), to the layout and display of every well-known historical artist, this place ROCKS. Partner and I spent 4 hours on an August Sunday afternoon first visiting the special exhibits then, wondering through the robust collection. Every room/gallery was well laid out and artwork had plenty of room to command its own space and visitors. The gallery app, sometimes spotty, was helpful in locating where we had wondered, but non-the-less useful. And some galleries were missing the room numbers. What a gem of a collection, in a well run museum, in a beautiful building (anchoring two different architural styles), and all for FREE. Cleveland you have a wonderful asset.

Fantastische Erfahrung: If you like the glories of art that demonstrates truth and beauty this is the place to go but only in the old museum. I am not a contemporary art person but sometimes I give it credit... The staff was wonderful is well done and appropriate.

Chris Parish 4 months ago

Fantastische Erfahrung: Was blown away with the number of permanent Van Gough, Gaugin, Picasso, Warhol, monet paintings housed here. The Native North American and Ancient American galleries are an incredible collection. The contemporary and media art was also very interesting. Very easy to spend a day here, and the building/Atrium is also it's own piece of architectural art. The grounds around and in front of the museum are idyllic for photos. There is a restaurant inside, and plenty of bathrooms and places to get water.

Fantastische Erfahrung: This was a great place. Really cool stuff. Even things from 1500BC. You could spend hours or just a quick walk through. The best thing is it's FREE. The outside grounds are nice too. The Methodist Church nearby has nice bells.

Fantastische Erfahrung: Always a pleasurable experience, I love heading to the Cleveland Museum of Art. A beautiful space, free admission, not super overrun, and world-class art in a beautiful part of the city. They also have Etruscan Boar Vessel 700-500 BCE, and the funny green glasses guy. Highly recommend!

Sabrina Warner 4 months ago

Positive Erfahrung: Doesn’t have the most famous pieces but still a very diverse and intriguing selection from both well- and lesser-known artists, all with concise, informative descriptions. Excellent exhibitions (we saw Monet in Focus, Korean Couture, and Into the Seven Jeweled Mountain). Beautiful atrium with food and drink from a variety of cuisines to fit individual preferences.

Fantastische Erfahrung: This is a NYC-level museum that could easily cost $15 per person, yet it's completely free. I love that it's open late on some days so I can go after work. Absolutely exquisite and highly recommended!

Shawn Kobb 4 months ago

Fantastische Erfahrung: One of the most beautiful art museums with the most impressive collection I've ever visited...and it's free?! I'm not sure how they make that work, but it is a must visit if you're visiting Cleveland.

Fantastische Erfahrung: Top 10 Art Museum in the US. The new renovations are quite astounding. I also highly recommend their café. Friendly staff all around. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

Fantastische Erfahrung: Went to see the Monet exhibit on loan from France! He is my favorite! Then we wandered over to Artlens & it is a must see! There's lots of pictures on a huge screen & you touch one you like & it opens up larger on the screen. It tells you all about the piece and where it's on display. Plus you can touch the artists name & it will show more of their art. Or touch the period in time & it will show more. Then there's a room where you can virtually make pottery, wear armor, wear jewelry, make a shape & it will find artwork with that shape in it. Then you can make virtual paintings! Then we wandered across to the original art museum and took in all the art on the first floor. It only cost $14 for parking!

Positive Erfahrung: I have been coming here as a patron, member, student, parent, and guest for many years. Obviously it is one of my favorite places to visit. That said, the security guards are becoming an issue. Most are wonderful, 10% will follow you from room to room if you aren't of a certain type of person (which I'm not; I'm an artist and I'm comfortably dressed, as are my children, when I'm there to draw or learn or whatever). Yesterday, the ticket man at Byzantium was condescending and rude, and multiple male guards followed me and my children (teenagers who are also professional artists) around incessantly. Don't do that! One literally stood arm's length behind me! That's creepy, disturbing, and borders on alarming. No security guard should be "breathing distance" from a patron, ever. We were not loud, not intrusive, not obnoxious...and we did not feel welcome. Parking attendant was very pleasant, so was front desk. (Also, you may want to have a professional Hollywood lighting company come in, glare and heavy shadows are really becoming terrible issues. It makes it hard to see many, many details.)

Holly Graham 4 months ago

Fantastische Erfahrung: So much to see and learn. It's free, you only need to pay for parking. Huge display! We were there over 2 hours and didn't see everything. Cute eatery with lots of choices. Gift shop was pretty underwhelming.

Fantastische Erfahrung: Great exhibits. Overall a nice collection with lots of variety. Location is close to other attractions. This area should be a must see for visitors to the city

Duncan Darby 4 months ago

Negative Erfahrung: The museum is exceptional; not so much the Provence sit down restaurant. We had the Crispy Pork Paillard at $27.00 a person. It was a fried pork schnitzel with a side salad of artichoke, endive, radish, and arugula. The pork was dry and tasteless. It reminded us of the frozen schnitzel you can buy at Aldi’s, but not as good! The side salad was small and underwhelming. The museum should be embarrassed to sell such a menu item to its patrons. The service was excellent but the menu selection epitomized a taste mediocrity of bland proportions. Inverse relationship of price to taste.

Negative Erfahrung: If you're going, save yourself the trouble and don't take a backpack... Even if that's where you keep diapers or other items for a toddler. I did. I decided to go on Father's Day with my daughter and partner. We entered the facility, went through the detector, and one of the workers politely told me that I either had to wear my backpack over one arm OR in front. I was a little confused by the over one arm portion so I asked him what he meant and put it over my shoulder asking if the position I was displaying was acceptable. He said "Yes" I proceeded more than willing to abide by his fair and kind guidance. We go past the front desk and its employees, we proceed upstairs to see some paintings, go into the sculpture room, into the Asian section. During this time we passed probably six workers in their blue shirts. We went there for Axum & Byzantium so in the Asia section I ask a worker where the exhibit was located. They guided me without issue. We see the Axum & Byzantium exhibit passing employees without holdup. By that point I had definitely shifted my bag slightly, but nothing across the back. So my daughter wants a drink, we go get her a drink, and sit in their food area by the bamboo shoots. I wanted to see the Medieval arms & armor so next we head for the 1900 Building. We enter and get distracted by exhibits, first the theology exhibits, then the self-portraits, and then my partner has to use the restroom. Mind you, we passed numerous workers in this 1900 Building and no one said anything to me about my backpack. We proceed to exit the 1900 Building when a worker stops me right before and says something to the nature of "Sir, your bag has to be under one arm not on your back." Now mind you it's only over one arm and therefore cannot be at my back more than my back side, a.k.a. not my back. So I kindly try to tell him "Well security at the front told me this was okay?" So he grabs the museum map out of my hand opens it and tries to show me where the rules are written, as if that changes the fact that an employee told me it was acceptable positioning when I entered. He continues to argue with me. At this point I'm starting to shake with rage at the fact that he wanted to argue with me when one of his equally ranked coworkers told me it was acceptable. So I said "Well then maybe you and your coworkers need to get on the same page, jacka--." and walked away furious. Don't punish me because your crew and company structure can't communicate or get on the same track so as to understand the rules. Really no one else said anything to me and he didn't say anything to anyone else as long as I was in the vicinity. I think he must have had a problem with me because of my size or, God forbid, maybe my ethnicity. I've certainly met Northern Europeans who don't like us Southern Europeans due to our tan complexions. Alternatively maybe he stereotyped me because of how I dressed, a black shirt and basketball shorts. I could see my backpack looking like it was on my back due to the fact that I'm a large man, but don't discriminate against me for my size just because you don't understand what it's like to be big. All I know is that crotchety man didn't say anything to anyone else and neither did the other workers. Maybe I just looked like the type to steal the Mona Lisa (note: they don't actually have this piece I'm making a joke), so he stereotyped me. Maybe he was just a boy scout who took his job a little too seriously. Maybe he was going for employee of the month or a gold star for the day. Some folks have nothing better to do than to be d**ks. I digress, I tried to go back to the exhibits, I even went to see the Medieval arms & armor, going upstairs to circumvent him, but I was just too flustered and couldn't retain anything I read or saw because of that over-the-top worker. All I know is that Father's Day is already rough on me, having grown up without a Dad, and that rat bas- out right ruined it for me. It was my first time at this museum, I went with great enthusiasm. I left in a funk and vowed not to go back.

Fantastische Erfahrung: Free, and incredible. Stop reading reviews and go check out the ancient stuff already! Very friendly staff. The cafeteria is mediocre, so I suggest having plans to eat somewhere else. Otherwise, there's entire days to be had here!

Negative Erfahrung: The museum itself is extremely nice and thoroughly laid out. It’s the best museum I’ve been to - art wise. The restaurant inside however is where they lose their touch. PROVENANCE CAFÉ was extremely expensive, poor quality food, and the staff was extremely rude to my girlfriend. She wanted a burger and they made it seem as though it was such a nuisance. I will not be going back.

Fantastische Erfahrung: What a gem this museum is! So many amazing exhibits and galleries! There is so much to see that you must plan to spend a few hours touring the museum. They host a monthly mixer on the first Friday of the month that is packed with great people and good vibes. Recommend to all locals and tourists alike!

Fantastische Erfahrung: This place was awesome, it's huge and we viewed haft the museum got to go back. It was a blast. Last time I was there was about 40 years ago I'm 68 years old now and can't I waited this long, and on top of everything it was and always is free, WOW!!

Fantastische Erfahrung: This is a full day museum if you are the type of patron who wants to see nearly everything and read many of the descriptions. There are also decent food options for all members of the family, along with a small coffee bar and some desserts. Some alcohol selections are available, too. The gift shop is beautiful, but I thought it was a little pricey. If you look at it from a donation viewpoint, the prices are 100% valid since the museum does not have an admission price, only donations welcomed.

Fantastische Erfahrung: My niece and her husband took us here on a recent visit. Frankly, it was a total surprise. I loved the exhibits and how they had arranged them. The content of the museum was outstanding. The facility itself was gorgeous. We had just been to the Art Institute of Chicago, which was, of course, terrific, but we both enjoyed this one more.

Fantastische Erfahrung: First time visitors from West Virginia! Our first contact was the very pleasant parking garage attendant who made us feel welcome and happy to be here. Walked around to the South Side entrance and the views are beautiful. The groundskeepers have their hands full but are doing a great job! Inside, we were greeted by a couple of attendants who were also very welcoming and friendly, as were all the employees we came in contact with. Much appreciated in a place where we want to nurture future generations to come to a better appreciation of the beauty in the past and present and continue this vision in their own lives, hopeful that they have great potential. After all, if you can be famous for a teddy bear dress, than is anything outside the realm of possibility? ;) Yes, it can be fun and thought-provoking at the same time. Enjoyed our visit and appreciated the variety of displays and the scope of works. Beautiful inside and out!

Fantastische Erfahrung: Art is always beautiful. So thankful that the Cleveland museum is always free. Great displays. Hardly even covered 1 floor in 2 hours. Will definitely return soon. Fantastische Erfahrung: The Cleveland Museum of Art is perhaps one of the most beautiful places I have had the joy to visit. Free to visit (with a reasonable charge for parking in the garage, and some special exhibits ticketed for, again, a reasonable amount), there is artwork from some of the world's most renowned artists such as Van Gogh and Cezanne, alongside art from cultures around the world shared with cultural sensitivity and incredible care. During my visit I was able to see their exhibit, Monet in Focus, a small exhibit of a few of Claude Monet's incredibly stunning paintings, including the colossal "Water Lilies (Agapanthus)." I highly recommend visiting the impressionist and post-impressionist exhibits, showing the beauty and immense work and care that goes into each of those paintings, and there's the Arms and Armor exhibit for those who love the majesty of metalcraft (and could be a great draw for younger folks who like knights but don't quite appreciate paintings yet)!

G Taylor Johnson 5 months ago

Fantastische Erfahrung: I am a member of the museum, so I may be biased, but I think it is a true treasure that Cleveland is so lucky to have. On this visit, I viewed the special exhibition Africa and Byzantium that explored cultural and religious connections among the empires of the Mediterranean in the period from 300-1500 or so. The information panels were thoguhtful and well written and the artifacts and art on display were beautiful.

Fantastische Erfahrung: Wow!! My husband and I are admittedly not usually art museum type of people, but it was a rainy day and we heard it was free. Beautiful paintings and sculptures, there is something here for everyone.

Cafeteria is very pricey, but the gift shop has some great deals I went on a weekend, and it wasn't even packed with people there. There was so much space i never had a run-in with the same person twice. They've added more work and even some modern artwork. It's not the best place for wild or small children because some things are not covered by glass, so keep that in mind.

Fantastische Erfahrung: Cleveland Art Museum is a free institution with a vast collection. In the Midwest, it is one of the best art museums, up there with the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Milwaukee Art Museum; in terms of collections. The renovations and construction that was done years ago creates a beautiful interior courtyard. As much time as you spend walking the rooms of the North, East, South and West portions of the museum, be sure to pull up a chair and relax in this covered area. It’s a great place to pause for a moment or be deep in thought about the work you are viewing. Some of my highlights of the collection include Andrew Wyeth’s last work of the Olson House (very important if you know the story), Picasso’s definitive blue period “La Vie”, and George Bellow’s “Stag at Sharkey’s”. After enjoying the museum, head to Little Italy for lunch or a nice treat at one of the bakeries. Take the cannoli : )

Except for special traveling exhibitions, the art museum is completely free to visit. The renovations over the last few years have created a beautiful, serene space. Perfect place for a date. Added benefit if you are a geek-- the atrium is the filming location for Shield Headquarters in Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Fantastische Erfahrung: This was an amazing museum to stop by while we visited Cleveland. Lots of great collections, and the museum overall is very well maintained and the galleries have a vast collection of art. Would love to spend more time again next time I'm here

Fantastische Erfahrung: LOVED It!! We didn't think it'd take us as long as it did but we spent 5 hours in there. The collections were amazing.

Fantastische Erfahrung: This is one of the best museums I have been to and it happens to always be free! I would actually pay to visit the CMOA. The architecture of the building is beautiful with a large glass enclosed atrium for having lunch or shopping their very nice gift shop! We spent a few hours viewing all the exhibits throughout the museum and nothing disappointed. I would consider this an art museum/history museum because they have a room dedicated to medieval battle gear along with a room dedicated to Egyptian pottery and mummies. 10 out of 10 would highly recommend!

Fantastische Erfahrung: Exceptional museum. IT'S FREE!!! Ranging from historical pieces to contemporary, this museum has it all. The gift shop and little cafe are nice too. The beautiful central main room is a perfect space to take a break before jumping back into another art era.

Fantastische Erfahrung: One of the best art museums I've been able to visit. Exceptional collection of impressionist works by Monet, Degas, and others. Many other fine works by Picasso, Van Gogh, Warhol, Pollock, and many others. Beautiful architecture with wide open spaces. Always free. Incredible.

Positive Erfahrung: Absolutely love this gem. There's always something beautiful and interesting to see there. I just wish they were better with their accessibility options for people who are blind and low vision. There aren't. Lance app has not been working for over 6 months. And I am not sure that their guides are trying to really good. Good descriptions to people who are blind and low vision. Counted on my husband to do other describing and reading for me. We had a wonderful time, but everyone does not have a skill describing like I do. There are many museums that offer really great services for people who are blinding location and our gym in Cleveland needs to step up their game.

Fantastische Erfahrung: Not sure why I keep getting asked but will state the same answer. This is a place you need to see in Cleveland. Been frequenting the place off and on since the 1950's. Still beautiful, still good to be there.

Fantastische Erfahrung: General admission is free. Parking in the attached garage was $7 for members and $14 for nonmembers. We went at 11am on a Wednesday and it wasn’t busy at all.

Fantastische Erfahrung: Incredible museum! I had no idea what a large museum Cleveland had. They've got a nice parking garage that is reasonably priced, museum admission is free, and they've got a really nice cafe. Even more encouraging was the fact that it has a nice crowd on a random Saturday. They've got some impressive pieces including Monet. But they aren't limited to one era or culture. It would take several visits to soak it all in.

Fantastische Erfahrung: Giant museum with exhibits from all around the world. There is paid street parking free on weekends along with paid garage and paid parking lots. The museum is free daily. And is open late on Wednesdays till 10pm. There is a cafe that serves food drinks and snacks inside. They have a gift shop and several bathrooms throughout the museum. No food or drinks aloud inside the museum unless purchased from the cafe.
