Experiencia fantástica: One of the must-see places in Kyoto. Old building standing next to its modern counterpart makes for a really interesting scenery. There are a lot of exhibitions at any given time so anyone can find there something interesting. A good break from shrines and temples of Kyoto. Nice souvenir shop too with some original options for gifts including goods featuring museum mascot Torarin.

Experiencia fantástica: nice museum only pity you can't take pictures inside, the main building on the photo was closed(((

Experiencia fantástica: nice museum, beautiful new building

Experiencia fantástica: Loved my visit to the Kyoto National Museum. I have visited Kyoto three times and this is the first time that I have sought out visits to the museums. Was very glad I did, because this was a great experience. Although the original red brick building was closed for renovations, the newer more modern building was open with great exhibits, and was actually quite crowded for a morning weekday. I wasn’t allowed to take many photos in the museum, but I think it’s certainly worth experiencing, if you have time and interest when visiting in Kyoto.

Experiencia fantástica: Well curated, interesting museum with a focus on historical fine arts. Good information panels and audio guide available in multiple languages.

Experiencia positiva: Nice place to kill time. Interesting exhibition, very quiet inside.

Experiencia positiva: The exhibitions are changed frequently, so every visit a couple of weeks apart promises to present a new set of well preserved national treasures alongside those that remain all year round. Access is cheap for a national museum of this kind; access is discounted for students and it is free for some exceptions such as students of Kyoto University.

Experiencia fantástica: Absolutely must to see! There are special lecture about the museum history free of charges held twice a day at B2 floor, there is free audio interpreter if you didn't understand Japanese much. There is also audio guide available for the rest of the museum 550 yen, which also recommended. You can't speak loudly or taking photos inside exhibition Building but you can freely take photo outside. Meiji building can't be entered for now

Experiencia fantástica: This Museum is well worth the visit. All the exhibits were really cool. The staff was also on point and helpful. Side note: the glass was so clean that I almost hit my head due to me not seeing it.

Experiencia fantástica: This is one of the high quality museum you should visit. It is very informative. I spent more than an hour inside.

Experiencia fantástica: Glad we made it here before going back to Tokyo. Particularly interested with the exhibition that showed the Twelves Devas, and another one that featured Japanese dolls. The only problem I had while looking at the masterpieces displayed was that the 3rd and 2nd floors smelled like foul feet. Maybe it was because of the chemicals used to preserve most of the historical remnants? But still. It was quite hard to breathe normally. Also got to see and HUG! the museum’s mascot—とらりん!

Experiencia fantástica: This is a beautiful exhibit! The old building is closed for renovation but the new building and ongoing exhibits are definitely worth a visit. The size of the exhibit is a bit smaller than you’d expect from the size of the building and price of the tickets however so keep that in mind if you’re on a shoestring budget.

Experiencia fantástica: Very impressive sections about history of Japan and history of Japan Empire on Kyoto too. It is also free for Kyoto University members.

Experiencia fantástica: I came to Japan hoping for uniquely Japanese experiences. This museum certainly delivers on that. We really enjoyed the english audio guide that was available to rent, as it really brought the exhibit to life. At the time of our visit the main gallery was closed, but they had an exhibit on the 36 immortal poets. It was fascinating to learn what an important role poetry played in the classical Japanese court.

Experiencia fantástica: Kyoto National Museum is amazing. Wonderful collections. We were fortunate to visit on an open free access day.

Experiencia fantástica: Main area was still closed when I went, but side gallery that was open was displaying the reunited works of the 36 poets. A real insight into the cultural milestones of Japan's art and poetry.

Experiencia fantástica: The architecture of this place is pretty amazing, the contemporary insert blends with the older structure through beautiful minimalist landscape. The content in the museum is really nice too, I got to see an exhibition on the 36 immortal poets and it was a great insight into traditional Waka poetry and Japanese calligraphy.

Experiencia fantástica: On the way to Sanjusangendo, I found out this place. The garden is beautiful and I was so impressed by the 5 Wisdom Buddhas on the 1st floor. The focus lighting made them stunning and I couldn't stop looking at them. And there are also other interesting exhibitions such as kimono, paintings, ceramics, etc. This place was worth visiting.

Experiencia fantástica: The special exhibition on “SWORDS OF KYOTO”, will be held till the 25th of November at “Kyoto National Museum”. This exhibition features nearly every National Treasure sword by master craftmanship exhibiting Japan's cultural heritage. Place: 527 Chayacho, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto-shi, Kyot

Experiencia fantástica: The main area was closed when we went but the exhibition that they had on history of Japan was really fascinating. The audio guides were also extremely helpful and I would recommend getting them especially as they're not that expensive.

Experiencia fantástica: The building itself is extraordinary. There are many good places to sit down, relax and contemplate. Check out the exhibition info before coming.

Experiencia fantástica: What an amazing museum! The structure itself is beautiful, and then the exhibit on the first floor was amazing. Huge imposing statues, with good English commentary. Well worth seeing for these statues alone. The only downside is that pictures were not allowed anywhere.

Experiencia fantástica: A calm place for people to appreciate antiques!

Experiencia fantástica: Came here on a rainy day to see the National treasures special exhibition. The pieces on display were some of the best I’ve seen. There are 3 floors with a good range in exhibits many on loan from other museums around the country. Unfortunately the permanent exhibition was still under renovation as of late October. Several people are complaining about the price (1500 yen) and how busy it is, however compared with similar special exhibitions in Tokyo I think it’s fairly reasonable and only a little busier (it was raining after all). If you plan a couple of hours and are patient you can get a good view of everything.

Experiencia fantástica: Kyoto National Museum has collections of examples from China, Korea and even Sri Lanka. This place is a good visit for Art enthusiasts. But they could really do with some detailed explanations and descriptions in English, because most are in Japanese.

Experiencia fantástica: I had a wonderful experience in Kyoto National Museum. The design of the two buildings is awesome. One is a modern style and the other is a classic style. I saw the 池大雅exhibition in 2018 summer. That was one of the greatest exhibitions I have ever seen.

Experiencia fantástica: Truly a beautiful museum with a stunning first exhibit when we were there yesterday. The third and fourth floor were unfortunately closed for renovations (?) at the time however our visit was still fantastic and I would highly recommend if you have time. Entry was 520 for an adult ticket if I recall and we spent 2 hours in the building to view the first two floors which was a perfect amount of time.

Experiencia fantástica: An impressive collection of Japanese pieces of work. I strongly advise anyone staying in Kyoto to visit the museum. While being quite quick to visit, it displays various objects such as historical everyday life objects or religious artifacts.

Experiencia fantástica: I was lucky enough to see the exhibit on Taiga. This museum is beautiful.

Jason Feingold 7 years ago

Experiencia fantástica: The facility is very modern and attractive. Inside are some exquisite examples of pottery and statues as well as some ancient scrolls with text and pictures that I have never seen before as well as excellent paintings from the medieval period. Good English text accompanies most of the exhibition. Even if you're not an afficionado of such things I consider it well worth a couple of hours of your time.

Experiencia fantástica: This picturesque museum offers visitors a stark juxtaposition upon entry as the old museum meets the new contemporary structure; a marvel of modern architecture, this building is breathtaking in design and well worth the visit. Inside is a vast array of ancient ceramics, paintings, garments, scrolls and many other artefacts. If you’re lucky, you may meet Torarin, the Museum’s character mascot!

Experiencia fantástica: Staff were very friendly and helpful. Interesting exhibits with both English and Japanese descriptions. Couldn't take photos though, and this was gracefully stated when I asked the staff.

Experiencia fantástica: 120 years old National Museum just raised a new very modern and chic pavilion in 2014, rendering much better options for displaying historical artifacts and objects. Original building completed in 1895, currently closed temporarily for renovation.

Allison O'Neil 8 years ago

Experiencia fantástica: This museum has a stunning collection of Japanese art and artifacts, but unlike other museums, it's not overwhelming or unreasonably expensive. Next time I visit I will definitely try the audio guide.

Zenn Tomokane 8 years ago

Experiencia fantástica: New wing is open while the historic building is going under upgrades and renovations. You will definitely feel the respect and history in the atmosphere. My favorite was the donated sword collection. NO PHOTOS Which is proper for the etiquette you must show to everyone and the national treasures.
