Experiencia fantástica: Reservation recommended Yes …

Experiencia fantástica: This museum and surrounds are a truly beautiful experience. The walk up the hill and the museum itself make the trip to Naoshima so worthwhile. The Monet exhibit and the way in which it is infused with natural light filtered through remarkable architecture is like nothing I have experienced before. What a fantastic place.

Experiencia fantástica: Loved it! The architecture was interesting, too bad they won’t allow photos, I don’t see how that would affect them but promote them more. My favorite was James Turrell’s room, but too bad they rush you to leave…so I just went again to see it after I made my round, so I could actually see the other colors.

Experiencia fantástica: I would highly recommend people visiting Naoshima to check out the Chichu Art Museum. For me, it was the best art exhibition on the island, with works from Monet, James Turrell, and Walter De Maria. The entire building was a piece of art in itself, and even though we weren’t allowed to use our phones to capture any pictures, I preferred it that way and found that it really amplified the actual immersion experience of each artists’ work. Don’t expect to be there for long as it’s not an extensive collection, but be prepared to appreciate light, architecture, space, and colour in a whole new way after this experience.

Experiencia fantástica: Astonishing, beautiful. I absolutely adored this place and in many ways, even if it was a little disappointing, appreciate the lack of photography. It's not that I think photographers are annoying, but in a way, certain installations just wouldn't have the impact they have, if you had people hanging around taking shots or if you were concentrating on the best angle rather than appreciating it. One room in particular blew my mind, the one with the coloured walls. You'll know what I'm talking about. As someone who struggles with "smear on the wall; call it a masterpiece" kind of modern art, I haven't stopped talking about this to people. I don't think that I even manage to convey the awesome feeling it was to walk up those steps and into that room... but I know I'll never forget it. The Monet display is also absolutely stunning, just as you approach the doorway and see this painting in all its glory which truly fits the definition of "Monet: beautiful from afar". An unmissable step on your trip to Naoshima, I preferred this to even the Benesse house.

Experiencia fantástica: This was the highlight of the day visiting all the museums and art houses on the island. The brutalist-like concrete architecture of Ando-san works best in this building, purpose built to house just 5 or so exhibits. Each is spectacular. The rooms and the art work together and create a tremendous impression of shape, color, texture, light. Awesome. I’d recommend hitting this museum last in the day if you are spending the entire day on the island, as it hits hardest! But if you are just visiting the island and have to choose between the many awesome museums and exhibits, don’t miss this one! Requires reservations via advanced ticket sales online to guarantee entrance, so plan ahead! Note that they do not allow any photography inside, which is why you don’t see any images on this google listing of the art you will find inside. In some ways that is best, so you will be surprised. The pieces and rooms are spectacular, you will see for yourself! Worth the trip to the island just to see this space!

Experiencia fantástica: The best gallery I have ever been to. The artworks and their displays are so well thought out. A joy to visit. Great cafe too! Picking up tickets is a 3 minute walk away from the entrance.

Experiencia fantástica: Loved it, all japanese museums I visited were something else. This was no exception. It was pricey, but worth it.

Experiencia fantástica: The museums is well curated. Pintores are not allowed so I can only post a few from the common areas. Highly recommend to make reservations walk in are almost impossible until 4pm. They have a cafe with an beautiful view that you can use to relax and refresh. There is also and amazing and well cared Garden with a lake that connects the ticket office a the actual museum that are two different buildings.

Experiencia fantástica: Quite frankly when I booked this museum I did not know what to expect. And when I got to see the museum myself, it’s just wow. No words can explain the uniqueness of Japanese art, especially this museum. It’s a mix of modern art without forgetting the simplicity of traditional Japanese art. One of the best museums I visited, and this is keeping in mind all the other museums in Italy and France.

Experiencia fantástica: One of the best museums I have ever been to. Three carefully curated art spaces featuring Turrell, Monet and deMaria in a stunning building. Photography is not allowed.

Experiencia fantástica: Absolutely amaizng. Should not be missed if you are on Naoshima island. Architectural mind blowing and the art installation equally so. Just go and see it !!! Cafe is also cool for a bite to get with an amazing view.

Experiencia positiva: A good experimental museum. It's relatively small for the price you pay, and no photography is allowed except the entrance area, which is too bad. I think architecture museum may be a better fit for this place as the building is magnificent. As of now, you have to purchase a ticket online before visiting, and you can specify the visiting time in 15 min increment. You won't be able to get in before the time on your ticket, and can enter up to 30 mins after the time, so you should really plan ahead.

Experiencia fantástica: Awesome art space, maybe one of the best in Japan. Massive underground rooms, with only natural light house 5 large Monets, light sculptures by James Turrell, and a space by Walter De Maria. All complemented by the beautiful Ando architecture. A real experience to be remembered.

Experiencia fantástica: This eclectic programming of artists from so different horizons is surprising but the scenographic is unique for each one, the Monet’s one is particularly splendid... it remains one of the must-visit in Japan

Experiencia fantástica: I have been fortunate enough to visit many spectacular and beautifully designed museums around the world, from Qatar to New York to China and Norway, yet the Chichu Art Museum with its modest design sits above all else. Its design by world renowned architect Tadao Ando is truly an ode to the spirit and subtleties that resonate throughout Japanese design. Even if it was devoid of any art, the experience of exploring its corridors, running your hand along the smooth concrete surfaces and encountering a brilliant shaft of light as you turn a corner is one like no other. Yet there is art and it is of the highest quality. Experiencing a group of Monet's waterlilies set in a curved room with a floor made of many thousands of dice like stones is very special indeed. The other highlight for me was experiencing Hiroshi Sugimoto's Seascapes photographs outside with a spectacular view of the Seto inland sea. I implore anyone and everyone to visit if they can.

Experiencia fantástica: Fantastic art museum with a handful of large scale permanent installations. The big winner is Walter De Maria's "Time/Timeless/No Time" due to the sheer scale and embodiment of the museum's theme of an exhibition that shifts visually across the time of day and seasons. The Monet's aren't the artists best so keep that in mind if you aren't interested in the other superior exhibitions. Turrel shouldn't disappoint however as his work is all light and optical elements that fit the brief. Food in the small cafe is typically slightly overpriced museum food in a western style but shouldn't disappoint as it's well prepared and the view from the cafe is impressive. Has elevators and ramps so decent accessibility however numerous exhibitions use stairs for full access. No photos allowed inside but a well stocked gift shop should get you mementos if you need them.

Experiencia fantástica: Really incredible space. The crowds were an annoyance on the day, so may be best to book the first time slot if available. No photos allowed and I'd recommend avoiding too much information. Experiencing each space for the first time was a wonderful experience. Words can't describe the feeling of stepping into something completely unexpected. Photos are of the surrounding area, not of the museum itself.

Experiencia fantástica: Beautiful beautiful museum, not many artworks like any other museums I’ve been to but every single one of them is impressive. The architecture was indeed a work of art. Be sure to visit Ando museum afterward. Also, I hope the staff read this review. We are the two silly tourists from Australia who mistook the closing time and left our bag in the locker. The staff was so kind and polite and incredibly helpful. We felt so bad and at the same time so touched seeing how much they cared. Things didn’t go as planned for us but meeting all these wonderful people made us fall in love with the island and its people even more. Once again we are really grateful for the staff’s kindness. Thank you. We will definitely be back and we won’t make the same mistake ever again.

Experiencia fantástica: Easily one of my fav museum in the world. It takes about 2-3 hours if you are into art and taking your time to experience every corner of the building. I found it extremely helpful by getting the museum handbook as it does a great job walking me through it. It strikes a out of the world balance with the building itself and the art prices on displayed. Can’t miss it. Get ticket online in advance. Also note that the open sky is meant for evening time, so consider that when reserving your time slot. If you weren’t in love with TAdao Ando, you just might be after visiting this. (No photo inside is allowed.)

Experiencia fantástica: The main reason for me to visit this museum was primarily to experience the space created by Tadao Ando more than the art that it exhibits. The building itself is like a giant artwork to me. The space inside was simply amazing. My favourite space would be the huge void(open space) once you pass through a short tunnel after entering the museum building. Simply breathtaking! Unfortunately, no camera/photography is allowed inside the museum. The ticket entrance is quite pricey and they only exhibits the work of three artists (Claude Monet, James Turrell and Walter De Maria) but I wouldn't mind paying it. Would love to visit this museum again. Wonderful experience.

Experiencia fantástica: By far on of the most amazing experience in my life. Everything here is amazing. Don’t watch photos of the art piece inside before going there and just enjoy. Prepare yourself by getting a ticket in advance tho, the museum is sold out during peak day.

Experiencia fantástica: No photos allowed in the space, but you walk through a beautiful garden before entering the stunning architectural space with highlighted work from 4 different artists including Monet and James Turrell.

Experiencia fantástica: Amazing gallery. The concrete architecture is amazing and very clever. No photos are meant to be allowed but everyone sneaks a few. The impact of walking into the room with Monets waterlillies was incredible. The cafe in the museum is quite nice too with some sandwiches and cak

Experiencia fantástica: I wish I could share pictures of the inside, but strictly no photography inside. Which is fine really because It is an amazing experiential museum. Make sure that you get tickets in advance. They only allow groups of eight into the museum at a time because each exhibit only allows a few people to view. It is a very quiet place. A highlight on Naoshima island.

Experiencia fantástica: Chichu Art Museum was constructed in 2004, showing a harmonic relationship between art and nature. It is mostly underground to respect the beautiful natural landscape of the island; works of art are viewed under natural light, changing appearance according to the passage of time though the day and the seasons of the year. The architect Tadao Ando used concrete, steel, wood and glass in a very minimalist design that favors nature and art. We could see 5 of Claude Monet paintings of water lilies, produced by the impressionist artist in his later years. Walter De Maria placed a 2.2 m diameter sphere and 27 golden sculptures in room with stairs and as you approach it changes appearance, the whole room received natural light from different angles that caused changes from sunset to sunrise. James Turrel use light as his artistic element in his works:” Afrum, pale blue”,” Open field” and “Open sky”.

Experiencia fantástica: Chichu Art Museum seems to be mostly of light-play, as most of the artworks are illuminated with natural light. Firstly enjoy the impressive spatial experience of Ando's architecture. Next, the five massive paintings of Claude Monet's Water Lilies series under natural light is spectacular! Then Walter De Maria installation. Enjoy them at different time of the day. Take a break at the Chichu Cafe. Try not to stay in the cafe and walk out and down to a hidden open area to have a change of perspective. Don't miss the James Turrell's Open Sky at sunset too which need to reserve early. Before leaving, have a tub of the locally made Sola Shio (salt) ice-cream and walk around of Chichu Garden. Please note no photography inside the museum.

Experiencia fantástica: Amazing masterpiece by architect Tadao Ando. Taking photos is not allowed. Better to visit this museum during low season. I visited this museum once in Obon holiday and it was terrible: very crowded and I need to wait fot 4 hours. Overall, the holiday season is not a good timing to visit the island.

Michael Watson 7 years ago

Experiencia fantástica: Quite an experience to see a gallery where the architecture is as important as the art. It was worth the trip. Bring money and time to visit all the offerings at this Island. JR pass was well worth it. The Monets are dramatically presented. No pictures allowed so buy the catalogue otherwise no one will believe you.
