🗣️ Museo de Artesanía y Diseño de Kioto: Opiniones
Experiencia fantástica: Very good free admission exhibition with exquisite examples of traditional crafts. Comes with English explanations of how these items are made and in some cases, how social rank/hierarchy is expressed through them. There is an expensive museum shop attached to this exhibition, but the crafts sold here are higher quality than what is sold in the tourist shops.
Experiencia fantástica: Good video demos, a live demo of gold inlay work, all crafts represented, only music is limited. There is an audio guide (1000yen deposit). You can even buy some items inside such as a gold inlaid tea bowl for 800k yen. The traditional shop at the end has items for the every man or woman. I was impressed by the step by step process shown for making certain crafts like the lacquer plates. It was very well done. Best of all, tada, it is free.
Experiencia fantástica: The exhibitions are well designed with various themes to keep the place interesting for long term resident of Kyoto. Love going there to make my own traditional prints, the workshop is available during weekends. There's also the free maiko dance every third Sunday of the month. We get to learn about their dance as well as their chosen kimono and accessories.
Experiencia fantástica: Brilliant museum! One could stay here all day long and appreciate the best that Japanese craftsmen and women can produce today. Simply amazing! English explanations and silent videos showing how each item is made. The green Michelin guide WRONGLY attributes 0 stars to this gem of a museum, those Parisian idiots. Don't let them fool you, this place deserves all your attention. Closing time is 17h00 (including the shop), but it's open nearly every day, even on Mondays. What a rarity in Japan. And guess what? Entrance is free!
Experiencia fantástica: The admission was free. There is a medium sized area with many beautiful objects and the associated descriptions. There are also some interactive parts which make it more fun.
Experiencia fantástica: This museum is superb. 1) the exhibition was done with care and had short but clear explanations 2) there are videos and signs in English to easily understand all the techniques 3) the building is beautiful 4) one staff member (so kind!) approached me to suggest me to follow their YouTube channel if I wanted to watch at home the rest of the videos displayed in there 5) it is f
Experiencia fantástica: Despite being small - when we went in July 2023 it was very dense, interactive & super interesting. Nice and calm space, helpful staff. Overall great experience
Experiencia fantástica: The exhibition is so nice. You will see and learn about arts & crafts from Japan and Kyoto.
Experiencia fantástica: Made a short visit before they closed and it was worth it! A small space but well curated, with beautiful objects on display. The interactive tables were a nice touch
Experiencia fantástica: Very interesting exposition of japanese traditional craft!
Experiencia fantástica: Very well designed exhibits give a good overview of Kyoto handicrafts. Provides a good sampling without going into great detail in any one area.
Experiencia fantástica: Excellent for people interested in traditional crafts in Kyoto, with very complete and helpful explanations in English - which is a bit rare Some of the other comments here make me wonder however if we were seeing the same thing others have seen. One comment indicates that this "is not a museum, everything is for sale". This was not so when we visited (January 2023), for although there was a gift shop, nothing we saw in the museum was for sale. My partner was particularly interested in kimono and fabrics. I was particularly interested in the wood working
Experiencia fantástica: It was really cool to see the tool exhibition downstairs! I learned how the Japanese people utilized different materials and techniques to weave baskets, carve masks and make tools! Very informative!!! ALSO, it was FREE to go when I went.
Experiencia fantástica: Wonderful museum for a rainy (or really hot) day. It does a really good job explaining (in English and Japanese) the various crafts of Kyoto. We really enjoyed the local crafts-people who are inside the museum making beautiful works as you browse the museum.
Experiencia fantástica: Well worth a visit, the current exhibition on local crafts is sublime.
Experiencia fantástica: Brilliant museum with craft demonstrations as well as exhibits. An exhaustive demonstration of crafts and craftsmanship from the Kyoto area. Rolling list of additional exhibitions.
Experiencia fantástica: Absolutely come here to do workshops and shop. The furoshiki were great quality and reasonably priced, as were other goods. I would have bought more if I had the space and done a workshop if I had more time. The workshops listed seemed easy to follow and worth a good hour or two to accomplish.
Experiencia fantástica: Great run down of most of the major crafts and processes if Japan. Plus, they even have live artisans working on their crafts - check their website for the schedul
Experiencia fantástica: Free entrance museum with awesome traditional crafts exhibits. There was good room to move around without being in the way or happening to destroy stuff. The things that are presented are very cool and really impressive. Good mix between movie-presentation, ordinary exhibits and some interactive exhibits.
Experiencia fantástica: Very good museum, shows real interesting things about Japanese culture. Very well displayed and good english explanation as well. They organise geisha performances for free!!! The entrance is free and I did have a nice lunch at the restaurant. Even the coffee was not as bad as in many places. I say DO check this one out!
Experiencia fantástica: Excellent free museum with many traditional crafts to see, learn about and even buy.
Experiencia fantástica: Very interesting especially when you have the chance to see various artisans perform their craftsmanship live. No fee to enter the museum but we'd gladly have payed!
Experiencia fantástica: Sometimes they will have crafters there actually making these traditional crafts. Very unique experience.
Experiencia fantástica: Very nice display of traditional crafts. Small and free to enjoy!
Experiencia fantástica: Fantastic, informative and immersive. It would have been nice to know that the try-it-yourself section closed at 4pm, but maybe we missed the info.
Experiencia fantástica: Excellent museum with a wide range of traditional crafts. Some days also include demonstrations.
Experiencia fantástica: Not ancient, but very cool. Nobody there. Great place for souvenirs.
Experiencia fantástica: I enjoyed Kyoto last month for five days and wish I could have stayed longer. I discovered the Museum of Traditional Crafts on the internet while planning my trip. As a student of Japanese embroidery I could not miss this opportunity. The exhibits are amazing and having local artists thoughout the museum demonstrating their craft was an extra treat. In addition to the museum store and their wonderful and helpful staff, I was fortunate to be there on a day where there were other artists in side rooms showing and selling their items. I enjoyed the museum so much I returned a few days later. The museum is located on the south side of the Heian-jingu Shrine and gardens.
Experiencia fantástica: Free! And better than the paid museums we went to. But we also like crafts so that may be why. Anyway great history. Neat displays. Good gift shop.
Experiencia fantástica: If you love handcrafted traditional art, this is the place for you. Beautiful selected pieces, instructive videos on how some pieces are made. Live demonstration by some artists. Plus is free. Great gift shop too.
Experiencia positiva: The building was a clean, modern, but typical museum. The landscaping about it was beautiful and enhanced by autumn foliage, as with much of Kyoto. Inside was clean and spaceous. I noticed restrooms to the side as I entered. The layout was easy to navigate. I went for a bonsai exhibition I was unaware of until I explored the front area for a few minutes. The bonsai exhibition area was easy to find, and I had a ticket in quick. The facility seemed a great fit for the exhibition. All-in-all, the facilities and staff made for a pleasant and memorable experience. The exhibition was amazing, and from displays and pamphlets placed around the building, it seemed more awesome events would be had.
Experiencia fantástica: The museum was a delight to visit. It was very informative with videos and staff demonstrating how various traditional crafts were created. All the pamphlets and placards came in Japanese and English. As of our visit back in May 2018, the museum was free, but you can leave donations. As with most museums, no photography allowed in The exhibition hall.
Experiencia fantástica: It's a lovely place full of beautiful things. Recommended to anyone with love for history and Japanese craftsmanship.
Experiencia fantástica: Loved it. Kyoto can be horribly crowded so it was good to get away somewhere quiet and interesting (and free) good displays
Experiencia fantástica: A good overview of the many and highly specialised traditional crafts. Well worth a visit.
Experiencia fantástica: Really interesting displays of a great variety of crafts. The museum is free. It's in the basement of the convention center, and therefore a bit "forlorn" in those wide open spaces. There were four craftspeople demonstrating ancient fabric decoration techniques. Really interesting!
Experiencia fantástica: This is a great place to learn about traditional crafts practiced in Kyoto. Exhibition text is in both English and Japanese, and there are craftspeople doing demonstrations (a real highlight! On the day we were there we saw cord being woven, bronze mirrors being polished, candles painted, and wood carved). I loved being able to see the processes used to make some of the crafts I recognised from my sightseeing in Kyoto.
Experiencia fantástica: Really worth visiting to understand traditional culture and crafts, here a mix of everyday/folk and exquisite objects for royalty and worship. Shop is affiliated with the museum
