Experiencia fantástica: Wait time 1 hr+ …
Experiencia fantástica: Awesome museum. A must visit if you are in the vicinity of the Skytree. The museum only collects an entrance fee of 100 yen yet has extensive exhibits detailing how the discovery and proliferation of tobacco and salt came to be in human civilization. The tobacco exhibit is by far one of the most interesting museum exhibits that I have visited in Japan. The salt exhibit is equally as good - I especially enjoyed the latter portion of the exhibit which focuses on how salt was produced in Japan in the olden days.
Experiencia fantástica: Very interesting commerce focused museum. I enjoyed the special exhibition on the history of Lighters which displayed both historical artefacts and period creatives together in the same exhibit. I found the Salt section fascinating as well. I wish there was an English guided tour option as my phone’s battery was low when using google translate.
Experiencia fantástica: Great museum! Well explained with lots of models and videos. Lots of English.
Experiencia fantástica: I originally wanted to go to this museum as a bit of a joke, because tobacco and salt seem like such a strange pair to house in the same museum. However, now I'm really happy that I went. Firstly, the reason why this museum is focused on tobacco and salt, of all things, is because from 1949-1985 tobacco and salt were strictly controlled under a government-owned monopoly corporation, thus the inseparability of the two products' history in Japan. The first exhibition space is all about salt, and it delves into the details of salt production not only in Japan but also the world. Real salt crystals from countries around the globe are on display. The science behind salt production and also why it's necessary for humans to consume it is also highlighted. The second exhibition space is a really cool journey into the history of tobacco, from it's earliest uses by the indigenous peoples of the Americas all the way to modern cigarettes and cigars today. Tobacco products from throughout the world and throughout history are on display, as well as a special showcase of Japanese tobacco production and consumption. Overall, a really cool niche museum. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Experiencia fantástica: Great little museum to see the history of tobacco and salt throughout the world and how they have impacted Japanese society. The permanent exhibitions are worth the low admission price and there are additional temporary exhibitions as well.
Experiencia fantástica: Entrance fee is only 100 yen, which is honestly such a good deal for a well-maintained museum like this. I appreciated the abundance of English translations, all of which were accurate. The high-tech and interactive displays were also super cool. It's a fun place to stop by if you're on the way to the Sky Tree, and shouldn't take too much of your time.
Experiencia fantástica: Wow, really interesting and informative. Lots of displays in English so I could understand everything. Well worth the ¥100
Experiencia fantástica: Surprisingly impressed with this place. Cheap entrance and very nice with some pretty cool exhibitions about tobacco and salt history in Japan and the world.
Experiencia fantástica: Really fun, unique museum that only cost ¥100 ($1) for adults. I also have an odd fascination with salt and tobacco... so... there's that too.
Experiencia fantástica: A very interesting museum! Not that really big, 2 main floors for exhibition and lounge on the top floor. The exhibition was moderately sized but packed with facts on early salt production and tobacco history. There are also samples of various pipes from different countries around the world and salt produced from different sources (rock salt, sea salt, lake salt). Very near to Tokyo Sky Tree and can be a quick short change of mood from lively department stores. Entrance fee is also very cheap, 100¥ for adult.
Experiencia fantástica: Two of life's most basic ingredients displayed in rich, historic splendor. This museum was clearly established with a passionate dedication.
Experiencia fantástica: Museum occupies 2 floors in the building, one for salt and one for tobacco. It might look like not much, but if you start to read the describtions and to watch videos, you might spend several hours there. All descriptions are in english and it is really interesting to learn some history and how it was made. Exhibition is interactive and equipped with newest technology. And the cost is only 100¥, so it's basically free. That includes a special exhibition, which was a miniatures at the time I visited it. I'm amazed how so well made and maintained museums asks for such a little for a ticket.
Experiencia fantástica: A place with many interesting exhibits. A modern building and a very nice and friendly service. On site you can see many interesting items from all over the world.
Experiencia fantástica: Perhaps the best museum in all of Tokyo. Very well done, professional, and informative. Only 100 yen. Amazing. The Salt floor is particularly amazing. They even have salt blocks from the famous salt mines of Poland.
Experiencia fantástica: A cute hidden museum with interactive exhibitions about salt and tobacco. The permanent exhibition has English descriptions and videos, there are also interactive displays. The entrance fee (as of Nov 2019) is only 100 yen.
Experiencia fantástica: Small but very tidy, informative and interactive museum.
Experiencia fantástica: The salt part, 2F, was very detailed with very great displays and information. The tobacco part, 3F, was visually stunning and has an extensive and awesome collection of tobacco related displays. For ¥100 entry fee you really can't go wrong. We came here after visiting the Edo-Tokyo museum.
Experiencia fantástica: Great museum!! So well done and super affordable (can't remember it was maybe even free). Very interesting and spacious.
Experiencia fantástica: (visits: 1) much bigger and nicer than I was expecting. I have been to a few strange museum and they tend to be small, kinda hodge podge. Like the parasite museum. This place was a big proper museam. And, hey Japan! I hate to be the one that ruins your innocence, but I 100% promise you many, if more than half those pipes, bongs, and hookahs are used to smoke weed, hash, and opium despite the museum calling them all tabacco pipes. Like how can a place of "truth", education, and history just lie like that. They show smoking tools from across the world and across time. Many cultures, Japan included smoke(ed) things other than tabacco. Anyway, off my soap box. The salt section was also really cool. I had not releaized how little I know about salt. And they have tons of different salts to seem microscopic to meter high rocks. And only 100 yen!
Experiencia fantástica: Great value and highly informative. Non-permanent exhibitions are definitely worth checking out. Very well organised and not super busy on weekends.
Experiencia fantástica: Sounds niche but totally fascinating. Ticket was ¥100, which makes it basically free. Definitely add this detour to a trip to Skytree!
Experiencia fantástica: Loved this place. Apart from the 100 yen entry fee, they have really interesting stuff. A must visit if you are in Tokyo.
Experiencia fantástica: A really interesting museum for a very reasonable price.
Experiencia fantástica: Worth much more than ¥100 entrance fee! It was a pity that I just had only 1 hour for touring around & not enough time for me to read through everything. Will come back again next time.
Experiencia fantástica: Wonderful museum, bigger than I expected for only 100yen. Shouldn't take more than an hour to visit. Most of the installations have an English explanation. Nice for a less touristy side plan.
Experiencia fantástica: This little museum is better than it has any right to be given it's obscurity and very specific theme. At first the combination might sound unusual but it does make sense considering it was established in the past century by the, then still existing, state-owned Salt&Tobacco Company. Although the museum itself is already a little older they only moved into this new building a few years ago and everything looks very modern and slick. The exhibitions are highly curated and focus on the titular topics of salt and tobacco respectively without overwhelming you with huge amounts of information, unlike other museums. The permanent exhibit consists of one floor about the nature, history of production in Japan and metabolic functions of salt, as well as another floor about the consumption of tobacco throughout history. Most text in the permanent exhibition is displayed in both Japanese and English though this might not be the case in the temporary exhibit. To top it all off the admission is a mere 100¥ making this museum an easy recommendation if you ever happen to be in the Asakusa area.
Experiencia fantástica: A very beautiful museum. The installation it's pretty new, the display it's very nice and entertaining. You can learn a lot about the history and process of this products. The gift shop it's really amazing. The museum it's very well located, you can walk from the sky tree, and the entrance fee it's 300¥ only
Experiencia fantástica: Rich information about the history if salt and tobacc
Experiencia fantástica: Very interesting!! I learned more about Salt and Tobacco than I ever thought I would. I recommend!
Experiencia fantástica: Disclaimer: I went here many many years ago (in the days before Google Reviews existed), but judging from recent pics, the place hasn't changed a ton. That's good. Salt and tobacco were key trading commodities for centuries, so this museum provides a wonderful context to understand the origins and development of trade routes and global trade through the centuries. The massive globe with lighted trading routes is really cool, too.
Experiencia fantástica: I spent generally around 10,000 yen every day and this by far was the most bang for my buck or 100 yen coin. The museum is in English and Japanese and salt from all over the world as well as going over the process to make salt in japan over the years and the tobacco part of the museum has a lot of old pipes and antique cigarette box’s from over the years as well as a very cool lighter collection. I really recommend this museum if you just went to see the sky tree and then have no idea what to do afterwards, you’ll probably spend 1 1/2- 2 hours here.
Experiencia fantástica: We went there because the concept seemed unique and even bizarre. We were surprised that the museum was very interesting. It shows the history of salt manufacturing and trade around the world, and also for tobacco. The main focus is on japan. Not everything is well translated into english, but even though it is very interseting.
Experiencia fantástica: Good museum for seeing salt making process. It also have history of tobacco in japan. Best to bring kids h
Experiencia fantástica: Great museum suitable for all generations, with art, models, illustrations, historic items, ... Explained with great detail. Very interesting. Nice shop as well !
Experiencia fantástica: Very well presented, I have never been more entertained by or learned more about salt and tobacco! Well worth the 100 yen entry f
Experiencia fantástica: Great value for 100yen, very interesting even for non-smokers
Experiencia fantástica: Surprisingly great place to visit. Cheap entry fee and well present exhibition. Not popular so can view at your own plac
