After making his debut as a cartoonist in 1948, not long after the end of the war, he moved to Tokyo the following year and began full-scale activities with children's magazines. The series "Post-kun", which cheerfully depicted the lives and play of boys, became popular and quickly became a popular cartoonist. Around 1960, while drawing humorous cartoons for weekly comic magazines for adults, he also expanded his field of activity to picture books, and in 1967, the first work of the "I Piki no Neko" series was born. There are some sly places, but all six adventure stories unfolded by cats that you can't hate somewhere, and the unexpected story development of a manga artist is pleasant, and it has become Baba's representative work that is still read from generation to generation. While working on a number of other picture books, he drew works for exhibitions with fellow cartoonists, and continued to serialize political cartoons in newspapers until just before his death. It can be said that Baba's wide-ranging creative activities over half a century have been aimed at giving people of all generations, from children to adults, a "good laugh" that warms their hearts. In this retrospective exhibition of unprecedented scale, in addition to the original drawings of representative manga and picture books, sketches that convey the production process and a keen eye for observation, a single picture and illustration of a cat, and three-dimensional works that he enjoyed. In addition, we will also introduce works such as boyhood and pre-debut works. Experiencia fantástica: 刈谷市美術館はあまり大きい美術館ではないのですが、とても企画展が優れている美術館です。例えば、和田英作(文化勲章受賞)など、伝統的なアーティストの展覧会もありますが、広くサブカルチャー系の中原淳一や、藤井千秋など、戦後の大衆文化に影響を与えた、でも、まだ美術界での評価が定まっていないアーティストを積極的に特集しています。また、絵本作家や、ちょっとアンダーグラウンド系の人など、意欲的な展覧会が多いです。また、まだ生きていらっしゃるアーティストの場合、本人がいらっしゃることもあり、私は斎藤吾朗画伯のサインをもらったことがあります。駅から十分ぐらい歩きますが、タクシーなどを使うほどではないと思います。企画展をやっていない時があるので、ホームページを調べてからが良いと思います。
