🗣️ Museo Bizantino y Cristiano: Opiniones
Experiencia fantástica: Collection of mostly Byzantine culture and paintings about all the periods, worth to see!
Experiencia fantástica: Very interesting place for a reasonable price. The entry costs 8 euros and our visit lasted 1h30 (we were far from reading everything, a proper visit could last hours). The location is beautiful, as much inside as outside. The museum starts at the christianisation of the roman empire and ends at the fall of the byzantine empire. Some pieces there are beautiful. The dimmed lights add to the mystical atmosphere. Only downside: 1 worker there was a bit rude with a friend, apparently in some places pictures are forbidden. Definitely worth a visit if you come to Athens.
Experiencia fantástica: To keep with the theme, the byzantine museum is styled after typical byzantine public buiblings which I found amusing. It's a beautiful style that hasn't been copied much.
Experiencia fantástica: A beautiful museum! This is a must visit in Athens. I love the explanation on the walls giving contexts to the artwork. It is in both Greek and English. Also when I visited in the afternoon it was not so busy which was very nice. The layout of the museum is interesting as well with vamps going all around. You are never confused about where to go. One is able to appreciate all the work from an artistic and historic perspective.
Experiencia fantástica: An excellent museum on Greek Orthodox history. There is a stunning collection of not only Byzantine artifacts, but artifacts from Ottoman, Venetian, and Genoese colonial times. Very insightful and would absolutely return again. All descriptions for artifacts are available in English.
Experiencia fantástica: If you're tired of looking at ancient stones, it's worth stopping by the Byzantium Museum. The museum is very modern, the initial rooms do not foreshadow what is really pulsating in the underground of this museum. There are really a lot of exhibits giving a significant substitute of what has been happening in these lands for over 500 years. I would highly recommend!
Experiencia fantástica: A very impressive museum, much larger than expected. We bought a combined ticket (15 euros each) for four museums (including archaeological museum). Highly recommended.
Experiencia fantástica: My husband and I hear went last June (our hotel staff highly recommended this museum!) we walked to the Museum in very hot weather (and a bit dehydrated from our flight) and after we bought our tickets my husband ended up needing to sit down from heat exhaustion. A security guard got him a chair, told me where the cafe was to get him water and fruit, and the staff told us that we could come back the next day when we were feeling better (without needing to buy new tickets) Took a taxi the next day and got in with no problem! Very kind staff, and a great museum too!
Experiencia fantástica: I saw three different exhibitions today, the one about Sifnos pottery, the one about Smyrna and the temporary religious paintings exhibition on the upper floor of the main museum. Lovely cafe on the grounds of the museum for a pause from walking. Service excellent.
Experiencia fantástica: A very nice museum with a wonderful collection of Christian and Byzantine art and artifacts dating back to the 1st Christian centuries. I particularly like the collection of art from the Rum community- the Christians who continued to live and flourish after the fall of Constantinople. The Cretan Renaissance art was eye opening as well.
Experiencia fantástica: The museum has a nice yard with a cafe and for Athens it’s really nice to see some spaciousness:) marble sculptures are awesome - you never tell that those come from 11th century! Very educational visit
Experiencia fantástica: An excellent introduction to the medieval Roman Empire which will leave you wanting more. The museum opens with the transition from antiquity into the medieval period and how that was experienced in the Eastern Roman Empire, covering changing trends in arts, daily life, architecture, and most importantly in the shift from paganism to Christianity. The museum does a good job in presenting the daily Christian experience and the spiritual aspect of the new faith as opposed to covering the many controversies and Ecumenical Councils of the Church, which are essential of course to the history of the period but might not captivate an audience which generally might only have a surface knowledge of the medieval Roman Empire. The museum then transitions into presenting the administration of the empire and facets of elite culture, with an impressive chronological presentation of almost every Roman Emperor from Constantine to the Palaiologoi done in gold coins (solidi and hyperpyrons) and an exquisite chrysobull (imperial decree) from the 13th century. This is followed by presentations of Orthodox iconography, showcasing some of the most impressive icons from especially the late empire, while some aspects of the Latin Empire and Latin occupation of Greece are also presented. Here is where, at least as of August 2022, you reach the "wanting more" part, as you find yourself at the end of the museum's permanent exhibition. It was apparent that there is more of the museum which is likely going renovation or which is having its exhibits updated, but the end is quite abrupt, while the exceptional narrative structure of the museum fades away towards the end, thus leaving a visitor without prior knowledge of the medieval Roman Empire somewhat confused and not much better informed about the Empire's triumphs and tribulations from the 7th century onwards. I would still very much recommend this museum to anyone interested in the Roman Empire and especially its imprint on Greece, and the exhibits are all presented professionally in very high quality facilities.
Experiencia fantástica: Lovely spot, full of beautiful roses. Highly recommend as a nice private park to go with little kids - a lot of interesting objects, good roads and no dog's poeps
Experiencia fantástica: Great place to go to if you enjoy Byzantine and Christian history. This place features Byzantine art and artifacts, including coins, textiles, archaeological finds. The paintings were particularly mesmerising -- colourful and intricate, they show the strong Christian influence within the Byzantine empire. The place looks small from the outside but it had multiple basements. At least 2h is needed if you want to explore this museum in detail.
Experiencia fantástica: One of the most beautiful museums in Athens, we enjoyed every moment, full of history from the Byzantine period, definitely worth this conference, you can find items from 300 something you will not find anywhere else in the world, highly recommended for families, the staff at the museum was very friendly, admission is not very high and worth it Definitely the exhibit in the museum
Experiencia fantástica: We thoroughly enjoyed our visit here. We learned a great deal about the history of our faith and felt grateful that all of these gorgeous relics have been preserved and presented so thoughtfully. One of the highlights of my time in Athens! A must see :).
Experiencia fantástica: Very powerful and beautiful Greek museum in Athens Amazing light !!! Beautiful art pieces! I felt very emotional! Ευχαριστω πολύ
Experiencia fantástica: Maybe you are not interested in Christian art, and perhaps your knowledge of Byzantine Greece is less than zero but visiting this museum is a lifetime opportunity. Incredible in the form the way and the size this museum will blow your mind. If the day is good do not miss the opportunity to visit its gardens and the neighboring Lyceum of Aristotle. Keep in mind that the visit will take you more than two hours.
Experiencia fantástica: A truly interesting museum that should not stay out of your Athens cultural spots list. The whole Byzantine art has something mystique and walking the museum which is definitely less crowded than the others ensures you get this feeling. There is a beautiful and simple garden where the museum is located that simply takes you away from the noise of the city. Worth mentioning the modern exhibition/display style, absolutely unexpected! Staff could be more interested in the visitors, though. Apart from the entrance where they were drinking coffee, there were very few of them elsewhere in the museum, making it feel soulless. And byzantine art and history is not something that tourists are familiar with.
Experiencia fantástica: Very impressive museum with beautiful presentation of its well curated pieces. Layout is a little bit confusing, as the main galleries are located underground, in a horseshoe shape around the main building. Lots to see, especially if you enjoy Byzantine art. Very small gift shop with limited selection. Gorgeous café with stunning views.
Experiencia fantástica: This museum is well outside the usual touristic museums trail of Athens. I also was there out the touristic season so the place was not crowded at all. It is situated just 10 minutes north of the Syntagma square acroos the military museum. The museum covers a very important period of the post classical Greek history. The museum is superb in my view and has a very large collection of exhibits that are also very well documented and presented. The cafeteria outside is also quite nice and you can rest and have a coffee in the middle of your visit. Reserve about 2 hours for it. If your visit to Athens is longer than 2 days or you have seen the main sights (Acropollis etc...) before then this museum should definitely be on your to visit list.
Experiencia fantástica: The venue looked deceptively small. However most of the exhibits are displayed in the underground hall. Could spent about 2-3 hours to peruse all the stuff. Entry fee is 8 euro. Anyone above 65 years of age is 4 euro. Once you entered from the main building, the ticket office is located on the left building and that’s where you start your journey. Most of the display are into Christian Byzantine era to 17 century painting of Christ and Mary including other themes. Other displays are marble crafting used in buildings, paraphernalia in daily life of people living in that era. All the exhibits are nicely displayed and themed. The lightings are good and very professionally maintained.
