Experiencia fantástica: neat little museum housing some black and white photos of the Canadian soldier who brought the little black bear cub to England. thus starting the story of Christopher Robin and Winnie the Pooh. Neat piece of history and its free admission. Great place to take non Winnipeggers to show the origin of the delightful children's book character
Experiencia fantástica: Very interesting place. Wish it was even bigger but for what and where it's located, I was happy with it. It's on the second floor and free to visit.
Experiencia fantástica: In 1914, during World War I, Canadian Army veterinarian Lieutenant Harry Colburn was on his way to the Western Front in Europe when he met a bear cub hunter in White River, Ontario. The hunter who killed the mother bear didn't need the female bear cub. The lieutenant took pity on the orphan cub and bought it for $20. The lieutenant emigrated from England to Canada at the age of 18. I named my bear cub after my adopted home of Winnipeg, Manitoba. A bear cub called Winnie crossed the Atlantic with a lieutenant and became the mascot of a mounted brigade stationed on Salisbury Plain in England. There are many photographs of soldiers playing with bear cubs when off duty. However, in December 1914, orders were given to the unit to move to the French front, and the Lieutenant sent Winnie to the London Zoo. After the war ended in 1918, after visiting the zoo and seeing Winnie so popular, the lieutenant decided to donate to the zoo. In 1924, author Alan Milne visits the London Zoo with his young son Christopher. Christopher became a big fan of Winnie and was the first to see Winnie when he came to the garden frequently. He even gave Winnie some condensed milk directly with the zookeeper. In 1926, Milne published the story of Winnie the Pooh, inspired by Winnie the Bear and the teddy bear his son took with him everywhere he went. Winnie the Bear passed away in 1934 at the age of 20. Lieutenant Harry Colburn opens an animal hospital in Winnipeg. Until his death in 1947, he was known locally as the author of Winnie the Pooh.
