Experiência fantástica: If you like interior and architecture stop by here for a quick tour ⭐️ The jewelry exhibition that’s going on now is exquisite (8/2024)
Experiência fantástica: Fantastic museum with very knowledgeable docents. A true Chicago treasure.
Experiência fantástica: Very elegant. Staff very friendly and knowledgeable
Experiência fantástica: This house takes your breath away!! A true rich treasure of history and Art. Its hard to fully discribe its so asthetic, I could visit once a week and still see something i missed. It takes your mind on vacation to another world...such a beautiful Experience.
Experiência fantástica: Absolutely spectacular. Do not miss it.
Experiência fantástica: Gorgeous museum! So much beauty and history here.
Experiência fantástica: We really enjoyed this mansion and the current jewelry exhibition. We paid $20 for admission and the $5 extra for the one hour private tour. Our tour guide was very good and answered a number of questions and pointed out interesting facts about each room and the history of the house and the family. Tidbits he provided about the pieces of jewelry in the exhibit were also very interesting. Of course the Tiffany lamps and collection were very special and we like the library and history of the various parts of the architecture. We spent a total of 2 hours. Staff were very nice and bathrooms super clean. Plenty of seating when you get tired and cut little gift shop.
Experiência fantástica: Wonderful smaller museum, architecture, art work, special exhibits showcase life in Chicago long ago
Experiência fantástica: I have been before and I am a member. The house is first class. The care that is given to that house is amazing! I enjoy the exhibits. The jewelry exhibit is great fun. There is no logic to the inclusion of pieces. Loosely based on Chicagoans owing the pieces. But it is a Pandora’s box of treats to see!
Experiência fantástica: A magical place nestled in busy downtown. A mind-blowing degree of opulence, craftsmanship and architectural love. Definitely worth a visit. Planning on going again.
Experiência fantástica: What a beautiful mansion! The mansion does have multiple floors, but there are elevators. The price for adults is $20 and then we paid $5 extra a piece for the tour. I definitely recommend the tour. You start out in the lecture hall for the academy of surgeons. Then the rest of the tour is all about the mansion. They do have a gift shop on the 3rd floor. But there is no eating or drinking permitted in a mansion. The staff was super friendly and accommodating. The tour is about an hour long. The staff said they do decorate for Christmas I would love to go back to see them decorations
Experiência fantástica: Stunning, fantastic gilded age mansion full of beautiful details and decorative items from the era. Possibly the nicest place to visit in river norrh. Post-reopening and expansion, there are 3 floors to the main house, two of which are currently the giftshop and a worthwhile exhibit on jewelry. You could rush through the museum in 30 minutes or you could easily spend 3 hours if you enjoy reading and looking at the details. For the average person who cares about beautiful places and things i recommend at least 2 hours to visit.
Experiência negativa: Before we went I called and spoke with a rep who said that there is street parking or if you park in the Row Self Parking it will be validated. Validated parking to me means that the parking will be free if you visit the museum. We went, parked in the Row Self Parking tower. When we checked in at the counter they did not question to see if we parked in the tower or not. When we got to the gift shop on the third floor I asked if they could validate the parking and the lady put a sticker on the ticket. Mind you, the only thing we did was park, walk the two blocks to the museum, waited in line, self toured the museum and walked the two blocks back. In total, the car was parked in the parking garage for one hour and nine minutes. Keep in mind, this is shorter than the time it would have taken to do the one hour tour plus waiting in line and visit the gift shop and that is if you entered exactly when the very next tour was about to begin. In any case when we went to leave the parking garage it still cost $17 for parking! So no the parking is not completely validated. The rep should have said discounted, validated typically means free not reduced cost. When you enter you are directed to go the the main room that has no furnishings it is a blank space with different placards you are able to read about the space. You must go to the desk to "check in" there is not a separate line if you pre bought tickets or if you didn't so really there is not a point of pre buying the tickets since you are still waiting in the same line as everyone who did not buy tickets online. If you have children they will just assume you don't want to take the tour and WILL NOT offer it because they "don't recommend it for children.". This to me is crazy because my children have successfully completed dozens of house tours which zero issues. The entry fee is $20 per adult and free for kids 12 and under. It is the same prices online vs in person. The guided tour is an hour and costs $5 more. The actual entry fee is hugely overpriced because there are not many furnished rooms, not much history or information about the styling of each room and generally not really a lot to see or take inat this home for the price they are charging. I have been to much nicer historical homes that had many more furnishings and things to see, more information to read about than this had to offer. Maybe the people who run this home can visit the homes in Newport, RI, Natchez, MS and the plantation homes in Louisiana and the Biltmore to see what else they can add to justify charging $20 per ticket. The placards are also missing many details of each of the rooms features. There is a jewelry exhibit on the second floor but nothing tied the jewelry to the people of the home, it was really odd to be honest to have a jewelry collection of random pieces in the home. They didn't have any facts about the jewelry featured so that too was disappointing. On Wednesdays from 5 until 7 the the entry fee is waved which is when I would recommend you go. Unfortunately today they close at 3 so the free option was not available.
Experiência fantástica: If you like old mansions, this place is a great museum to check out. They have really good collection of Tiffany stain glass windows and lamps. Highly recommend a visit if you like antiques and mansions. The place has been kept beautifully and well maintained. Each room is unique.
Experiência positiva: The home was very nice and so what the building next door. Tickets were a little bit high compared to much nicer homes such as in Newport Rhode Island. This home is very unique to Chicago and nice to know that history is still being preserved. Too bad the other mansion across the street is not viewable. Certainly a good stop to put on your trip.
Experiência positiva: Wonderfully restored home. Tour lead was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Felt uncomfortable as I explored the home and exhibits on my own before the tour. Was asked to move my extremely small pack that holds only a sunglass case, mint box, cell phone and wallet to my front. I wasn’t even allowed to carry it over my should like a purse. And it was a lot smaller than the bags and purses others were carrying. Then the staff began to follow me around. Yuk. If they don’t want you to carry anything in the house they should let you know before you purchase entry or offer to safely hold your things. When the tour started the tour guide made a comment about my shoes. They were closed toe and simple flats. ???
Experiência fantástica: Stunning period mansion. Exceeded my expectations. Be sure to sign up for the guided tour.
Experiência fantástica: Great museum of the gilded age.
Experiência positiva: The ground floor is very nice, but everything else is kind of underwhelming - gift shop selection is not good either. Definitely something you can skip if you are short on time.
Experiência negativa: It was just jewelry, $20 dollars to see almost empty spaces, not worthy, lost the history of the house, just some pictures from what it was, the first floor is the only one that have the history and stuff, not good if you want to actually see and old house inside tour
Experiência negativa: I didn’t find it interesting, 10$ would be a more appropriate fee for what you get to see. Many part are not accessible and labeled staff only. Entire 3rd floor has nothing meaningful, just a shop.
Experiência fantástica: Mesmerizing detail in every aspect of this mansion museum from the 19th century! Worth the visit!
Experiência fantástica: Anything that made you go 'Wow!" has been demoted ... This house is Luxury with caputal L
Experiência fantástica: I strongly recommend visiting it to learn and see how a wealthiest banker built a residence in guilded age.
Experiência fantástica: What a beautiful gem of a house. It may have the most tiffany glass I have ever seen. I would consider this a must see if you are visiting Chicago.
Experiência fantástica: An amazing home filled with fabulous art and glass. Strongly recommend visiting, especially when you can take a guided tour.
Experiência fantástica: A very beautiful and quiet museum. The rooms upstairs are quite bare but are still quite enjoyable. If there’s no one in your way, you can very well pretend jumping 100 years back. I’ve been to many museums in Europe and I like them more than American. This museum is closer to European, in my opinion, and is very well worth the money.
Experiência fantástica: Loved it, definitely worth the time. I would like to go again with a tour guide and also learn more about the history. We didn't buy tickets in advance.
Experiência positiva: A museum located in a Glided-age era mansion/house. There was a decent amount of artwork in that building and the late 19th century architecture comes to play in the inside too due to the presence of wallpaper and dark wood. However, I wish the museum included more furniture to display such as a bed, dressers/vanities, coffee tables, and etc.
Experiência fantástica: The first floor looks amazing with all the real furniture, and you should definitely check it out. The second and third floors don’t have much in them, just empty rooms. But it’s still a really pretty place to go see.
Experiência positiva: Was more interested in the house's history than the art collection currently on display, but tour was about 50/50.
Experiência positiva: Great experience. Loved the Guilded age furnishings. Dining and drawing rooms were my favorites. Would have loved to gone to dinner in my Tuxedo and then had a cigar in the smoking room. It would be great if you kept the clock at the top of the stair wound just to hear the chime ring through the house.
Experiência positiva: A small museum showcasing an exquisite home from the 1800s. The building has earned the name marbel palace with exquisite walls and staircase. The ground floor is spectacular filled with original furniture and well worth seeing. Unfortunately the second and third floor living quarters are missing their furnishings and are empty rooms. Worth seeing but hard to justify the $20 entry
Experiência fantástica: What an exquisite museum that houses lovely and elegant events! Stunningly beautiful! The staff is marvelous too!
Experiência positiva: Pretty stellar museum of a beautiful home owned by a gilded age fatcat. Absolutely gorgeous craftsmanship and a lot of art nouveau influences. Hidden gem off the mag mile!
Experiência fantástica: A beautiful house/museum showcasing a display of opulence Many Tiffany lamps, ornate woodwork and furniture
Experiência positiva: As someone who loves Tiffany lamps I was thrilled to see the collection here.
Experiência negativa: We were very much looking forward to visiting this museum. However, a woman named Jeanne who gives the tours there was was very rude to us. She and her tour group entered the room we were in and then she mocked us and told us we were mot welcome in the room. We will no longer be recommending this museum. The reception staff were kind, but Jeanne, their boss, was not. Avoid this museum at all costs if you’re allergic to snobbery. No amount of marble or beautiful Tiffany stained glass can make up for ugliness. Art is meant to celebrate life. Jeanne’s attitude rather inharmoniously clashed with her surroundings and failed to live up to that philosophy. The museum should chose better docents.
Experiência fantástica: I have made somewhat of a hobby of touring gilded age mansions. This one is among the finest I have seen. Elaborate marble and hardwood interiors which vary in theme from room to room. The owner has displayed his collection of Tiffany lighting as well as other period appropriate decor throughout the mansion which really sets the vibe in the best way. It underwent meticulous restoration under twenty years ago so this is a rare chance to see a mansion of this period as it may have looked when it was new. It would be my pleasure to visit again.
Experiência fantástica: This is a super cool historical site! It's great for learning more about the history of Chicago, but they also have modern installations as well.
Experiência fantástica: This ornate gem is so worth a visit, especially if you like art nouveau style. The first floor interiors are the most beautiful, so start in the third floor and finish with the gorgeous salons and dining room on the ground floor.
Experiência fantástica: I was blown away at the beauty of this museum / mansion. The mansion was built in 1879 and displays the beautiful fireplaces, beautiful woodwork, you'll learn about the lifestyle of the family that lived there - where they ate, their dinner menu, where they hosted guests. There really is a lot to see. I'm afraid I'm not doing it justice, so I say go and see it for yourself. Experience it with your eyes. I think you'll love it, just as I did.
Experiência fantástica: If available take the tour!
Experiência fantástica: Beautiful Gilded Age home! A must see!
Experiência fantástica: The house is the museum. Every room is a lesson in architecture, design, and arts & crafts.
Experiência fantástica: This was on my daughter's trip to do and I wasn't sure if I would enjoy it as much but the beauty of the craftsmanship drew me in. The Tiffany glassworks, the intricate wood and stone carving, tile work, and the carpentry were so inspiring. We didn't take a tour, which might have been helpful, but I was looking for more details on the artisans who made the beauty than the people who purchased them. We took our time and were pretty slow, but this museum only took 2 hours. Even without the elevator, the stairs were not too much, though it is 3 stories of very tall rooms. The entrance fee is credit only. Nice gift shop.
Experiência fantástica: The most spectacular house in Chicago! Either self guided or a guided tour for an extra fee. Details and craftsmanship are unmatched. About an hour or so to get through.
Experiência fantástica: Really amazing space with well informed staff. Great for history, art, and architecture buffs.
Experiência fantástica: Felt like I transported back in time! Incredible home. Worth a visit even though the current price of $20 per adult is pricey.
Experiência positiva: wonderful historic museum, elevator is broken so you will need to climb stairs
Experiência fantástica: Such a great museum. The tour guides were very knowledgeable. The history of the home is very well displayed
Experiência fantástica: Beautiful house with interesting history. Art Noveau, marble, and elegant design. Temporary exhibition space as well, and a great escape from a hot day, also.
Experiência fantástica: The Driehaus Museum offers a unique glimpse into Gilded Age opulence in Chicago. Housed in the meticulously restored Nickerson Mansion built in 1879, the museum transports visitors back to a time when grand homes and lavish parties were the norm for the city's wealthy elite. I visited on a quiet Thursday morning and had the beautiful interiors largely to myself. The stained glass, intricate woodwork, Fresco ceilings and sumptuous marbles wowed at every turn. Throughout the mansion, the period decor and furnishings were faithfully maintained or carefully restored. I felt like I was stepping back in time. One standout was the Chickering Grand Hall where everything from the soaring two-story stained-glass dome to the lush parquet floor dazzles. It's easy to imagine the orchestra playing and grand parties held there during its heyday. The adjacent two-story art gallery also houses an impressive collection of pieces from the Gilded Age. The Driehaus Museum offers scheduled tours or audio guides to learn more about the Nickerson family history and the restoration work done on the mansion. Costumed interpreters are also on hand for additional context. I opted for self-guided exploration and still found it fascinating. This is an ideal activity for history buffs, architecture admirers or anyone seeking an immersive peek into Chicago's extravagant past. The elegance and grandeur of the Gilded Age lives on beautifully at the Driehaus Museum. It's a historic gem not to be missed.
Experiência fantástica: Well preserved opulent house. It's pretty amazing and once you add in all the pieces of artwork it's a must see!
Experiência fantástica: A beautiful, fascinating example of Chicago's Gilded Age. Ask for a tour with Jeanne S. She's an excellent docent!
Experiência positiva: nice small museum with a 19th century decor. worth the short visit.
Experiência negativa: To truly enhance your museum visit, I recommend opting for the guided tour, which is a mere $5 addition to your ticket. It's important to plan accordingly, though, as the guided tours run at specific times and last for about an hour. If you prefer to explore independently, a self-guided visit can range from 20 to 40 minutes. While the museum is undoubtedly captivating, I must admit that I found the overall cost slightly on the high side for what it offered. It's a destination I'd primarily recommend to those with a keen interest in exploring the French influence on Chicago's architecture. However, I would advise against bringing children under 12 years old, as there's a substantial amount of reading involved in the exhibits.
Experiência fantástica: Beautifully preserved and maintained aesthetic period home. Gilded age of Chicago at its finest.
Experiência fantástica: must see museum-mansion in Magnificent Mile area. Reminds me of Frick Collectioni inNY and Museo de Arte Decorativo of Buenos Aires. Well maintained, not too many people, very friendly and knowledgeable staff.
Experiência fantástica: GORGEOUS gilded age. Definitely recommend the tour, very informative. Plus they have exhibits going on in the rooms on second/third floor. Afternoon well spent.
Experiência negativa: Felt very unwelcomed by supervisor of the Museum. She doesn't know how to communicate properly. I appreciate the legacy story of the Nickerson Mansion but compared to Turnblad Mansion in Minneapolis and the hospitality of Swedish retirees who are also volunteers, it doesn't have much to offer.
Experiência fantástica: If you love Tiffany, architecture and Art Nouveau this is the place for you. Stunning, detailed and beauty are the 3 words I would use to describe my visit today. Staff was very friendly, knowledgable and helpful. Three floors of amazing architecture and artwork was well worth the entry fee in NH book.
Experiência fantástica: Small hidden jewel hidden in the heart of downtown chicago, this beautiful mansion displays an amazing collection of high end masterpieces of furniture from all over the world. Whether you are a Chicagoan or a tourist, this location should be in your top 5 things to do in Chicago. It provides a dedicated insight of rich life from more than a century ago as well as the costumes of the time. The museum is well taken care of and the self-guided tour app is amazingly well designed. It is possible to follow your own pace and stop for any curiosity about any of the artifacts. (Furthermore the app stays available after the tour to review some of the notes that have been missed during the walk). Been there already 3 times for few different occasions and still find it worthy to spend a couple of hours noticing new details about the place. Thanks for keeping it in great and mantained shape.
Experiência fantástica: Definitely one of the best ways to explore the architectural and design culture of Chicago. this house has furniture in fantastic shape for it's age and is overall decorated beautifully. If you're a Louis Tiffany fan (art glass, not jewelry) then this place is for you. I've never seen so many beautiful Tiffany lamps in one place! Highly recommend for locals and tourists alike.
Experiência fantástica: I recommend a guided tour, because you can learn a lot about history, they have a lot of knowledge. The entire mansion, interior, furniture are preserved in excellent condition making it a pleasure to visit this museum.
Experiência fantástica: What a terrific house to visit. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was left wanting a little more and I hope they can restore some of the servant areas in the future that are only handled with some photographs right now. A terrific way to spend an hour or two in Chicago. I recommend it.
Experiência fantástica: Great mansion from the late 19th century and recommend the guided tour.
Experiência fantástica: Really fun and affordable place to enjoy if you enjoy architecture, history, and art! Friendly and helpful employees.
Experiência negativa: I would NOT recommend paying for an annual membership for this museum. If a particular exhibit interests you, by all means, feel free to go. However, the museum offers very little to members in the way of openings and benefits. The space allotted to members for the events is very limited and reservations for such events are not easy to obtain and the site is not very instructive about the process in which to obtain such slots. There are plenty of other museums in Chicago that do a much better job connecting with their members and making them feel valued. Do not waste your money on an annual membership.
Experiência fantástica: Absolutely worth it! Don’t miss this place when visiting Chicago
Experiência fantástica: Little known Chicago attraction, but definitely worth it. It is really neat to see what high class Chicago looked like back in the Glided Age. Great that there are two houses preserved right in Downtown. The marble was amazing, great artwork, stained glass, tiffany lamps and more. Not sure about the Muslim fireplace though.
Experiência fantástica: Fantastic glimpse inside a mansion from the Golden age! Richard Nikel exhibit was superb
Experiência fantástica: A real gem in Chicago, love dropping in every time. It's a museum that you can see in an hour or less.
Experiência fantástica: Really great museum to stop by, it’s a really neat stop in downtown Chicago if you have time.
Experiência fantástica: Beautiful architecture and artwork definitely recommend seeing it the staff were friendly and attentive highly recommend spending an hour or two exploring.
Experiência fantástica: Beautiful first floor! The dome is amazing. I’ve been here multiple times and the staff are always friendly and knowledgeable. Literally 2 blocks or less from the Starbucks reserve. Pretty decent gift shop!
Experiência fantástica: Absolutely beautiful home. There is a lot of love and care that has gone into its restoration. The guide was very knowledgeable and answered all questions.
Experiência fantástica: fantastic gilded age mansion - recommend guided tour. Now featuring a Louis Sullivan/Richard Nickel exhibit. Park at the Row garage two blocks south, you get a $15 parking credit from the museum if you bring the parking garage ticket to show them
Experiência positiva: Interesting, nice building, good history lesson, but not a whole lot of there there. Beautiful rooms but the history of the place isn't that compelling other than being a well preserved post fire mansion with unspectacular tenants. Period bathrooms were a nice touch. A bit pricey for a relatively small mansion being written off as a tax deduction by a hedge fund.
Experiência fantástica: Walked by this property many times, it’s definitely a hidden gem of architecture, art and fine craftsmanship! Very much enjoyed our very thorough tour!
Experiência fantástica: Beautiful Gilded Age Mansion on Erie St. Worth the admission price. Great exhibit on Sullivan and photographer Richard Nickel.
Experiência fantástica: Great experience. I would recommend adding the tour guide package to your ticket purchase, for an extra $10. It adds dimension to the museum.
Experiência fantástica: A wonderful place to visit to learn about Chicago architecture. Great customer service. Very nice gift shop (so tempting to go back for a beautiful antique necklace I saw there!) A great place to take guests visiting Chicago to.
Experiência fantástica: Amazing experience. Must see if you are interested in beautiful craftsmanship, Chicago architectural history, and a must-see bathroom 1st floor. Easy parking out front, 2 hour meters.
Experiência fantástica: This place is a gem and a must see museum in Chicago. It explores themes in the architecture of Louis Sullivan and the photography by Richard Nickel that documented the destruction of many of Adler & Sullivan’s most important Chicago buildings. There are many art collections of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Absolutely beautiful!!!
Experiência fantástica: Very beautiful, restored historic house that was worth the visit. They have a free self-serve coat check and a $5 guided group tour that lasts an hour. They have several tours a day. (Credit card friendly.) Very friendly and knowledgeable staff as well. They had lots of information about the art pieces there and the history of the previous owners. Lots of Tiffany items. The upstairs rooms are mostly empty of historic furniture but used as an art gallery.
Experiência fantástica: Well preserved history at its finest! This 3 story mansion-turned-museum features unique architecture, artwork and furnishings that have been expertly maintained. Given the staff are so passionate and knowledgeable, I recommend the guided tour if your schedule allows. General admission tickets can be purchased in advance, although not mandatory, for $20. The website lists guided tour times, which are first come, first serve with limited capacity and $5 extra upon arrival. Expect to spend a solid hour here.
Experiência fantástica: This place is a gem and a must see museum in Chicago. There are many art collections of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Absolutely beautiful!!!
Experiência fantástica: We love small museums which sometimes are even more interesting than the major ones. This is an architectural marvel, a mansion that was fortunately saved from the wrecking process. The home is decorated with genuine art nouveau furnishings which adds to the beauty but the house itself is just incredible. All of this, gives a picture of what it was like to live in the Great Mansions of Chicago during the Golden age.
Experiência fantástica: Do not leave town without seeing this exquisite example of "turn of the century opulence"
Experiência fantástica: Definitely worth a visit, I've visited palaces in Europe and this home was like a small slice of decadence in Chicago. It was 3 floors, and the designs on the wall and woodwork was immaculate. The lady at the front desk was very helpful, good visit overall.
Experiência fantástica: This is a fantastic work that is carefully restored to give a window into the world of home architecture and interiors in the Gilded Age. Like a mini-Biltmore, the home itself is a masterwork of many designs that were, at the time, married into a single piece, and the staff were both friendly and helpful in filling in any gaps that weren't covered by the available information. When I revisit Chicago with friends, I'll be taking them here.
Experiência fantástica: I lived in Chicago for a good part of my life, and I cannot believe I haven't visited the Driehaus Museum until this week. It is a wonderful place to visit. A great view into Chicago during the Gilded Age.
Experiência fantástica: Not as grand as the Newport mansions but worth an hour or so.
Experiência positiva: Nice interior with wooden showcases, different tiles designs on the walls, different model chandeliers in all floors.
Experiência fantástica: A gem in the middle of cement jungle! A big mansion with amazing decos.
Experiência fantástica: Beautiful home rich with history and gorgeous collection of art. The tiled walls are amazing!!
Experiência fantástica: really awesome living museum, only takes 45 min to get through
Experiência fantástica: This is an incredible place. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. The house itself is a work of art. Almost every square foot of the building is a call back to a time of complete craftsmanship.
Experiência fantástica: Really beautiful museum/house with incredibly kind and knowledgeable staff. Take your time moving through to catch all the beautiful details of the pieces in the rooms.
