Experiência fantástica: Loved learning about the Chicago fire, sports, musical and entrepreneurs.

Experiência fantástica: Every school in Chicago should enlighten their students with a field trip to this museum!

Experiência positiva: Exhibits are well organized. Would have liked to see more artifacts.

Experiência negativa: Pass on this one. My son and I enjoy museums and haven't came across many that disappoint us. This one is on that list. The exhibits were underwhelming and lacked basic information, like what parts of the city the events in history occurred. Barely any info on the worlds fair. Boring. Maybe good for kids.

Experiência fantástica: Great museum. I really enjoyed the free tour they offered. Tickets are half the price on Groupon.

Experiência fantástica: I spent about an hour here and thoroughly enjoyed it. I wish I had more time on my hands. The perfect place to be for those unacquainted with Chicago's history

Experiência positiva: Came here as a rainy day activity. The staff was very pleasant and I enjoyed the exhibits, particularly the old train carriage. We had food from the nearby café which was average - but go here for the knowledge!

Experiência fantástica: I am not a history museums person but when I think of a museum this one is just that. it’s interactive with games that informative to Chicago history as well as modern city. It’s not overload of just pictures but you have clips and different sculptures. There was restaurant next door had good vegetarian menu and gift-shop to buy souvenirs. I learned a lot about 1876 Chicago fire and other little exhibits with historical Chicago as well as modern the tour guide was did a great job! For $19 bucks I would go again!

Experiência positiva: This was not my favorite museum. The diorama exhibit was amazing but I was pretty underwhelmed with everything else, especially with how many great museums and cultural centers Chicago has.

Experiência fantástica: One of the city’s lesser known museums but definitely a worthwhile outing. I’ve lived in Chicago all my life but still learned things I didn’t know!

Experiência fantástica: Very informative and well designed museum. You can visit every other Tuesday for free if you are an Illinois resident. Allocate about 3 hours to see everything. It was delightful finding out about all things Chicago! The gallery with the dioramas were absolutely mind blowing, the fire exhibit and the freedom exhibit were eye opening. I loved the fact that they included so much about more recent history too: about Chicago jazz, technologies that emerged here, national brands that calls Chicago home, Chicago skyscrapers, etc it was wonderful. There were signs all around galleries acknowledging that the museum is missing parts of the Indigenous history of Chicago and with qr codes they were asking for input which I appreciate.

Experiência positiva: Loved this museum! My five year old enjoyed it as well. He is an Abraham Lincoln fan and we visited the Peterson boarding house in DC and we were told the bed were Lincoln died was in Chicago. Clearly we had to come visit and see it for ourselves. So sad to have leaned details about the Chicago fire. But beautiful how they were able to build back up. If you love history you must come here. It was a rainy day so we had umbrellas and jackets and it was easy to get all that stuff checked in and store for us.

Experiência negativa: Very overpriced for what you get to see. If you have kids maybe it's worthwhile for you, otherwise save yourself some time, money and go to the Field or Science and Industry Museum.

Experiência fantástica: Great museum highlighting local Chicago history including the Chicago Fire and Lincoln. It's easily accessible by public transit (22 Clark Bus, 36 Broadway Bus, 72 North Bus, and 73 Armitage Bus) and just steps from Lincoln Park. As a local artist who sells stickers and souvenirs in their gift shop, I appreciate how easy they are to work with and the great selection of locally designed items that they carry that capture the spirit of Chicago. After having designed a few custom merchandise collections, I can tell how much care they put into each unique exhibition and appreciate how their attention to detail shines through in the exhibits and merchandise they offer.

Experiência fantástica: Always a fantastic job on the exhibits showcasing such variety and research . I was asked to donate some items. Totally forgot. I should revisit that.

Experiência fantástica: Well curated exhibition. I went with my husband and we both enjoyed it and learned a lot of interesting tidbits about Chicago’s history. Plan to spend 1-2hrs. It’s not very large but does have a lot of material to read (though it’s well written and accompanied by cool historical objects).

Experiência positiva: We had some time to kill with friends and decided to visit on a whim. The museum is good to keep you busy for a couple of hours. The exhibitions are quite interesting and they have lots of artifacts and photos to see, but I thought they were organized a bit chaotically (at least I couldn't understand the logic). Definitely worth a visit for history buffs, but I wouldn't put it in the "must see" attraction in Chicago.

Eric Olvera 8 months ago

Experiência positiva: Went with my family. Did receive a military free entry. There are also other discounts you can qualify for check the website. The museum is good to keep you busy for a couple of hours. They have a great Chicago fire exhibition. There are lots of artifacts and photos to see but i feel like the museum is missing a bit of more modern history and photos. They do have a cafe to buy food, snack machines, and shop where you can buy souvenirs. Oh and there isnt a parking lot i saw associated with the museum so i had to park on the street. Overall i thought it was worth seeing but it will only keep you busy a couple of hours.

Experiência fantástica: I had a wonderful experience at the museum, the content, objects and stories were exhibited and delivered so well. I'm not particularly a history buff and knew very little about the city but the museum made me keen to learn more. It is definitely one of the better quality history museums I have been to with a focus on both the historic past and the relevant present issues of this complex city. The highlight was that I was lucky enough to join a guided tour on Sunday afternoon led by Mr. Swanson who was so knowledgeable. He took us through the highlights, mentioning interesting stories and interacted with his audience to keep them engaged and entertained. He knows so much about the city and its history, a true gem of a guide with an unique background who is happy to volunteer his time and knowledge. The travel tips he gave me were all excellent as well. Thank you so much!

Experiência negativa: I know Chicago has a really interesting history but I did not learn it at this museum. Very little interactive exhibits and actually a few contradictions that were troubling. Do not waste your time or money here unless a huge overhaul is done.

Experiência positiva: Dear Chicago History Museum, I really enjoyed my visit. The staff is kind. The collection is nice and informative. I truly liked the exhibition “CITY ON FIRE: CHICAGO 1871”. It is clear presented and it gives a lot of small interesting details of this event. Thanks! However, I have several questions for the museum: 1. What if I don’t know the history of Chicago as a whole? Unfortunately, I would not have any idea of it after a visit. Please, maybe you can make a part of your exhibition a clear and easy digestible timeline of the great city. It could be a start clearly organizing in tome any other exhibitions happening in the museum. 2. Do you have a deep idea of organization of different halls? Either you don’t have it, or it is really complex and tricky — either way I cannot see it. Ask your visitors and if I am not alone you can make organization more apparent! 3. And finally… Why does the big portion of a second floor stay empty? Why is it ready to supplement aristocracy with great weddings venue? It can be a million different things (for example, a great interactive hall for our kids to explore the history of Chicago sports or Chicago factories) but not a venue hall staying empty. Maybe some of the companies, who played a great deal in Chicago history, can sponsor you in return of mentioning their role? E.g. maybe Chicago Bulls can sponsor you if you mention that a revolutionary MJ basketball shoe has a name of the great city on it? Dear Chicago History Museum, you have so many chances to be a much greater, fun and interactive experience. Please, be it!

Experiência positiva: There’s limited seating in the café area and the closest parking is a paid parking garage that sits a block northwest of the museum, so if someone in your group that has limited mobility and can’t be left alone, it’s quite a trek. However, the exhibits are top-notch are as interactive as they are informative.

Experiência fantástica: To me the Chicago History Museum was one of those buildings you’d pass near daily but never went into. Not because of an off putting exterior or anything like that, it just seemed like an attraction you only did as a tourist. Anyway, one fateful day after a meeting was canceled last minute, I found myself with an open afternoon and decided to give the North & Clark Café a try. Tasteful exhibits dedicated to Chicago’s history and various noteworthy memorabilia line the walls from the moment you arrive. Additionally, several of the Café’s dining spaces feel as though you are in the midst of a gallery, the solarium-esque room in particular, with its pillars wrapped in photography and the elegant yet commanding commodities exchange stonework overlooking it all, this makes for an excellent place to work, relax, or bit of both. While I’ve yet to tour the museum proper, I can strongly recommend the North & Clark Café and accompanying foyer. 4.7 / 5 ⭐️

Experiência fantástica: So bizarre that the IWW was founded in Chicago, and there is no mention of them in the museum. So many other unions were mentioned, and activist stories shown, but no workers of the world. Still had a great time.

Experiência positiva: If you're looking for a coherent history of Chicago, this isn't it. It's just scattered bits and pieces. There were surprisingly large sections on the Chicago fire of 1871 (good, but more immersive than informative), and also the many products and developments that came out of Chicago at some point: architecture of course, controlled atomic reactions, Sears Roebuck and other retail (way too much space dedicated to consumer products), pork, and a little bit of railroad and canal stuff. Most exhibits were OK but short on important details. Where are the maps of railroads and canals they're talking about? I had to Google some architectural terms the museum had mentioned as innovations. How can you write "Hog butcher for the world" in large font without citing Carl Sandburg? Can you put Chicago's overall historical timeline kind of in one place so i don't have to piece it together from several exhibits? It's probably better for younger children than for adults.

Experiência positiva: A great museum that is well worth the price of admission. Unfortunately, not at the same level as Chicago's top tier museums. I wish they took a deeper dive on topics like Al Capone and meat packing industry. Parking is easy at the nearby parking lot (ask for validation). Old Town is a 10 minute walk away - great food options.

Experiência fantástica: On Wednesday, August 8th, my friend and I (we are both teachers) got to spend the afternoon here. We mainly went to learn about the history of the Chicago fire. Our guide, Mike, did an amazing job explaining info that was insightful and interesting. He showed us maps, gave us insight on individual stories of people involved in the fire, and showed us interesting artifacts about the fire. I personally don't always enjoy learning about history, but the information was of perfect density that I was interested in every word, and I learned so much! Great job, Mike! After the tour, I lost track of him and didn't get a chance to tell him how much we loved his presentation, so hopefully someone reads this and shows it to him. I later found out that he is a volunteer for the museum, but I think that someone needs to pay this man for the amazing service he is providing! My friend and I on the way home talked about what was our favorite part of all the things we did in Chicago today. We both agreed it was Mike's Chicago Fire presentation at the Chicago History Museum.

Experiência fantástica: From outside, the building feels small for a museum. The first floor wasn’t impressive. But I learned a lot about Chicago’s history from the exhibits on the second floor. Great curation! Wish my hometown Boston had a history museum like this one

Dave Cameron 1 year ago

Experiência positiva: Two-story attraction where nearly every thing is on the 2nd floor. Start with the major section of Chicago's key points and how people adapted starting with the early 1800s to modern day. There's a big section commemorating the fire of 1871. Very informative; with a few smaller areas, but very little interactive stuff. The children's area is a room that has some stuff for little kids; albeit not a ton. Good place to spend a couple of hours immersing. At our visit; there was a separate room on Polish Chicago (there are more Polish people in Chicago than any other city outside of Warsaw).

Experiência fantástica: Wonderful museum with multiple rotating exhibits as well as permanent exhibits of the history of the city and different diverse aspects of the city. Older exhibits can be white washed but they acknowledge this and seem to want to update. New/twmp exhibits have more contemporary view of history and can be multilingual.

Experiência negativa: If you must go to this museum, go on a free day, otherwise it's not worth the visit. The displays are fragmented with out a cohesive timeline. The Native American exhibit is shamefully small, almost non-existent and yet other large sections are wasted on the Chicago fire. I'm only giving this 2 stars because the staff were really helpful and friendly. Front desk will validate parking making it only $10.

Experiência fantástica: After going to this museum I've found it to be one of my favorite in Chicago. If you're from out of town visiting this is a great place to jump off from.. Even knowledgeable locals will learn something here. This museum will meet you at your level and is great for kids too. The Chicago History Museum is in a great location with access to the lakefront, close to downtown, in a safe neighborhood, and has bike racks as well. I would highly recommend going no matter the age or level of background knowledge.

Experiência negativa: I recently visited the Chicago History Museum with high expectations of exploring the rich and diverse history of this vibrant city. However, I left feeling disappointed by the museum's excessive focus on slavery and 1960s black politics. While acknowledging the importance of these historical topics, I had hoped for a more comprehensive and balanced representation of Chicago's history. The museum's limited scope made it feel out of touch with the broader narrative of the city's evolution and neglected other crucial aspects of its past. Furthermore, the overemphasis on slavery and 1960s black politics left little room for exploration of the many other significant events, movements, and cultural contributions that have shaped Chicago's identity. It missed an opportunity to delve into the diverse communities, industries, and cultural transformations that have made Chicago the dynamic metropolis it is today. Although it is essential to address the darker chapters of history, a more inclusive and nuanced approach would have provided a more comprehensive understanding of Chicago's past. By showcasing a wider range of historical perspectives and themes, the museum could have engaged visitors with a richer and more relevant experience. It is my sincere hope that the Chicago History Museum takes steps to update its exhibits and broaden its narrative to reflect the multi-faceted history of this remarkable city. By embracing a more diverse and inclusive approach, the museum can better captivate visitors and provide them with a more accurate and meaningful representation of Chicago's past. Overall, while the Chicago History Museum offers some valuable insights, its excessive focus on slavery and outdated themes left me disappointed. I encourage the museum to reevaluate its curatorial choices and evolve with the changing times to deliver a more comprehensive and engaging experience for visitors.

Experiência fantástica: We spent a morning here on our first trip to Chicago and enjoyed it very much! The permanent exhibits are informative and the temporary exhibitions are well-done. I learned a lot during the visit and found that most of the interpretation was relevant and up-to-date, though they acknowledge that there are some things that they need to revise and invite feedback. My only complaint, if you could call it that, is that I would have liked a suggested walking route so as not to miss anything.

Experiência positiva: This museum provides a wide variety of experiences for all age groups. There are 2 levels, everything is accessible and clean, and multiple restrooms are clearly marked. Staff is friendly & helpful. Several exhibits detail Chicago history from its origins to modern times. Tragedies include Haymarket, the Great Chicago Fire, the Eastland Disaster, etc. Exhibits run from the first train in Chicago, a first printing Declaration of Independence, and a flag attributed to Betsy Ross. An old wooden train car, the first to operate on the Chicago "L", dates from 1893. The Dioramas are interesting but most are too dark. It's amazing to see the various inventions & technologies created by locals, from Motorola's first cell phone to Sears Mail Order catalog. Most exhibits are labelled in English & Spanish. I loved the Jazz Room. There's a nice cafe to catch a real Chicago hotdog, too. Don't miss the old stockyards archway while there. My few quibbles: entry door is poorly marked, parking is street or fairly distant, price is a little steep. I would love to see an info sign for the L car (I had to look it up online) & the use of QR codes to access more info about exhibits online while you're there.

Experiência fantástica: Well designed, top quality exhibits of Chicago history. We spent a little under 3 hours and that was about right to see everything. Parking is nearby and plentiful for us on a Saturday afternoon. I've been looking into family genealogy so having dates, addresses, and occupations of my grand parents and great grandparents, et. al. in the forefront of my mind I tried to imagine their life in the historical context of events displayed at the museum. I was fascinated; however, I don't think this is a good time for kids. This is an adult oriented museum with a wealth and breadth of Chicago history.

Aleks Ruso 1 year ago

Experiência positiva: Went there for one of the free entry summer days. Would definitely recommend allowing yourself 2 to 3 hours to see everything inside. They have interesting exhibits mostly about Chicago and the history of the city but also a little bit about the state of Illinois. It is very well organized and entertaining. Parking is a little bit of a struggle so plan ahead or at least plan some time to find parking. The only downside was that the don't go in much detail about the historical events and mainly concentrate on big names.

Experiência fantástica: The Chicago History Museum is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in the history of this great American city. Even on a cold, rainy afternoon, the museum offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere, filled with fascinating exhibits, interactive displays, and knowledgeable staff. From the moment you step inside, you'll be transported back in time to the early days of Chicago's founding and growth as a major industrial hub. The exhibits are thoughtfully curated and expertly presented, allowing visitors to explore the city's rich history in a variety of engaging ways. Whether you're interested in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, the city's role in the Civil Rights movement, or the rise of Chicago's many famous politicians, you'll find something to pique your interest at the Chicago History Museum. The museum's collections are vast and varied, encompassing everything from ancient artifacts to modern multimedia installations. I particularly enjoyed a room dedicated to Chicago's metamorphosis in high-rise architecture. What's more, the museum is staffed by a team of friendly and knowledgeable experts who are always happy to answer questions, provide context, and share their passion for the city's fascinating history. Make sure you take the time to meet Michael at the reception desk, he is wonderfully friendly and clearly the "face" of the museum. Whether you're a lifelong resident of Chicago or just visiting for the first time, you'll come away from the museum with a newfound appreciation for the city's rich and diverse heritage. Overall, I highly recommend spending a cold, rainy afternoon at the Chicago History Museum. Or even a warm, wonderful, perfect-weather morning! It's an experience that is both educational and entertaining, and one that is sure to leave a lasting impression on anyone who visits. So don't let a little bad weather keep you cooped up indoors – head to the museum and discover the history of this incredible city for yourself!

Parking is a bit of a walk so recommend being aware of the weather when visiting.

Experiência fantástica: My husband and I came from out of town to visit the Abakanowicz Research Center for an out of print book. About a week beforehand, I had emailed in the middle of the night and they got back to me first thing in the morning with information. I then made a reservation for a weekday afternoon, the day of our flight. Navigating and parking was easy enough, there is information on the website. We made our way inside the museum's front entrance and were directed to the elevator up to the research center after confirming our reservation. Once upstairs, we signed in and they immediately handed me the book I had emailed about. Everyone there was very nice and extremely helpful. On our way out of the research center, we stopped and looked at a few displays near the door and learned a few very interesting things. We did the same thing on our way out of the museum area. I wish we had more time to spend there that day. I'd 100% recommend a visit.

Experiência negativa: I don't understand why this museum has such a high rating. I suppose if you know 0 about Chicago you could go in here. Take the city architecture cruise for $10 more and learn more about the city as you cruise the Chicago River. This place is a skip. You can learn more history by walking around and talking to locals. This is not a good city history museum.

Experiência positiva: It's filled with a lot of important historical events in Chicago and in the USA. I would say that it's quite decent for the average visitor despite the bad movie that they show. Overall, exhibits are quite interesting and this is a good museum to go to learn about Chicago's history.

Experiência fantástica: I went to the museum today 8/28/21 and had a wonderful experience. Plenty to see and the Vivian Maier exhibit was an added plus. I have been trying to come here for years to the new location and was lucky enough today to have some time to make a visit. The staff was friendly, the restrooms were immaculate and the rests of the museum was spotless. If you have the time and need a little break, checkout their Cafe and maybe next time I will try something else on the menu besides the crispy fries. The crispy fries were good and the price for most food items tended to be a little high, like I saw a hot dog priced for $8.00. The staff at the Cafe were courteous and very polite, the food was quickly brought to your table and the Cafe; like the rests of the museum was spotless. If you get the chance make a visit to the Historical Museum, the experience is worth the admission price. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The admission price 19.00 for adults and children are free and students are 17.00. That is pretty low compared to the Field Museum which I paid 27.00 and the Art Institute almost 30.00 because the exhibit there are extra and here the exhibit VM was for free.

Experiência fantástica: Stumbled across this museum after walking back from Lincoln Park Zoo. Wow! What an amazing museum. Really powerful, eerie and an excellent source of information to discovering what Chicago is really like and how it revitalized itself after the Great Fire. Definitely recommend visiting.

Experiência positiva: I liked the museum overall, you can learn a lot about the history of Chicago. There are great pictures and the movie show you can watch. Great expositions of Vivian Maier photos, civil rights, if fire in Chicago and sports. However, I would wait for a free admission day rather then pay $19.

Experiência fantástica: Nice smaller museum. You can get through all the exhibits in a single visit. The exhibit on unrest in Chicago was especially interesting. Worth a visit!

Experiência positiva: Really interesting set of exhibits across Chicago’s history, its key leaders and what makes Chicago a great city. Wish that there were more advanced concepts in the museum to help connect with the past better.

Experiência fantástica: As a Chicagoland native (and city resident for 15 years) I was proud to see an ode to my sweet home. Not sure why Pritzker has an area in this museum but that's the least of our problems. There's so much to learn here so its great to bring the kiddos along (though the smaller ones might get bored with most of it) Check out their cool gift shop too!

Experiência fantástica: We especially went for the display about The Fire. Excellent exhibit. We liked most the individual stories. We also saw fashion displays from designers, photos taken by an unknown artist, and so much else. Not enough time to see everything. We will have to come back.

Experiência fantástica: I worked with Samantha at CHM for my client's wedding on July 3rd. She is just an absolute joy to work with. Very timely answering emails, always available when we needed to visit and was onsite for the day of the wedding, pitching in and helping where needed. On top of that, she did it all with a smile. That's the best part! I certainly do hope to work with her again for future events. You rock Samantha! Fabulously yours, Qiana Turner, Owner and Chief Event Planner Madison Elyse Events

Experiência fantástica: Very entertaining and educational! It isn't just about Chicago history. It also has some U.S. history as well! If you are a true historian and just love learning about facts you didn't know before, then this is the place to go! If you want to travel back in time, then this place is also the way to go! Take advantage of those free days for Illinois residents! The staff are very friendly and welcoming. The museum is very clean. Before visiting the museum for the first time, I thought it was just going to be old Chicago history like 19th and 20th century. But, I was surprised to see some 21st century history that isn't so much far back! That is so cool that they try to include as much history as possible. The most fun part of my museum experience was learning about the Chicago Fire. You learn to humble yourself a bit and really look at what's truly important. You get to see old letters of those who survived the Chicago fire! Amazing!

Experiência fantástica: A really fascinating museum to visit! I would still recommend The Field or the Museum of Science and Industry first, but this is great if you're looking for something other than the main ones down south. Got a Groupon which was nice. It's way bigger than it seems and it's full of really interesting displays and information.

Experiência fantástica: First time here today with friends b4 going out to dinner. Great exhibits over a couple floors. Spend a hour or two without having to cover a lot of flour space. Love that these days.

Experiência fantástica: If you love my hometown Chicago like I do, this museum is a must see. I learn more about this city every time I visit. I became a member a few years ago. Mainly so I could attend the special exhibit openings each year. The museum is housed in a historic building in Lincoln Park, in a lush park setting. I recommend that you visit the website to plan your visit, so you're sure to make time for the most important attractions. Most of the museum's exhibits are not interactive, so not a lot of appeal for little kids. But there's a special area set aside just for them, with activity based learning. Ample discount parking a few blocks away in Lincoln Park. And a terrific store and cafe that are much better than you'll find at most museums this size.
