Museu Mexic-Arte

Experiência fantástica: Really enjoyed browsing the artwork in this gallery. It was a very manageable size and we appreciated the eclectic pieces celebrating Mexican culture.
Experiência positiva: Tiny museum. Interesting art works but poor descriptions. The art was hung on the wall with a list of artists and their artwork on the side but you couldn’t tell which was which. The whole visit took us 20 min. If you’re in the area and have half an hour to spare, it’s worth it. Nice shop of the museum.
Experiência fantástica: Incredibly thoughtful and well curated museum. Beautiful diverse interesting art! Great gift shop too. Must visit when in Austin! Plan to spend an hour or so here.
Experiência fantástica: Cool art, nice people, and cool old creaky floors. Would come back given the chance.
Experiência fantástica: A must see cultural experience. Absolutely gorgeous art. Some of the best we'd experienced in the city.
Experiência fantástica: It's a quirky museum with really revolutionary ideas of presenting and selling art. This was the first art museum that provided the idea of democratizing art.
Experiência fantástica: Amazing! The art was breathtaking!
Experiência fantástica: Very nice, quaint, art museum.
Experiência fantástica: Great little spot for some modern art con cultura.
Experiência fantástica: My partner and I were in Austin for a layover and saw that this museum was free on Sunday and I decided to go in. We loved it. It was very welcoming, the art was beautiful, it highlighted amazing Latinx artists, and has an amazing gift shop. Would definitely recommend visiting as it's an affordable cultural experience.
Experiência positiva: The museum is free on Sunday. Overall, it feels more like a gallery than a museum: We saw an exposition of a specific art movement that was broken down by year, but it did not have much coherence overall. I appreciate them showcasing modern artists, however, their selection/curation process is not clear. I do not recommend going in on the days it’s not free. As for parking, we found a spot on the street.
Experiência fantástica: Wonderful museum to visit! Cute gift shop at the front. We went on a Sunday so our admission was free! Definitely recommend checking this place out
Experiência fantástica: Though this museum wasn’t huge, I loved so much of the art they had inside. It’s a collection of the artists that joined an annual program, and each year had a few excellent artist’s impressive artworks.
Experiência positiva: It was a super cute spot
Experiência positiva: FYI, closed until April 12th, only the gift shop is open.
Experiência fantástica: This time we went they were in the middle of staging a new gallery, so we mostly had access to just the store. They did have a TV playing slides of all the work and different displays they had set up over time, amazing work. I've been here several times. I can see there has been thought and intuition that goes into the way they build out their displays and make artist selections. This is not just a random gallery. There's a lot of heart and soul that goes into what they do here. The only way to understand it is to see it in person. They still had some cool little pieces to look at while the gallery was being updated. We bought some little gift store things we thought were cool. Staff is always 10/10
Experiência positiva: The museum is closed, hence the 4 stars instead of 5, only the gift shop is open but they have some wonderful artwork, sculptures, jewelry and other things for sale. Picked up some gifts for my kids while in Austin for a conference. Beautiful work, thank you!
Experiência fantástica: Cute place that exhibits local artists. Really nice staff
Experiência negativa: This is NOT a Mexican art museum! There were no Mexican cultural pieces other than the gift shop, and the graffiti art on the outside of the building, which was the best part of the museum. I do not recommend wasting money to get in if you're looking for Mexican culture and art. So disappointing
Experiência positiva: Small yet effective museum. You can go through pretty quickly or take time to resonate with the art and exhibits. Take advantage of the free days, but donate if you can!
Experiência negativa: The manner in which the artwork is stored is despicable and the environment is a hazard and not accessible.
Experiência negativa: Water leaks all over the building! Sylvia Orozco should be fired!
Experiência negativa: It is not handicap accessible. There's mold EVERYWHERE. Management also needs retraining. I won't recommend this to students, family or friends.
Experiência negativa: CORRUPT, UNSAFE MOLD INFESTED BUILDING. this place is letting their employees and artifacts rot in a disgusting building. firing people who speak up, forging signatures and not allowing OSHA to intervene. this place doesn’t care about mexican people, mexican disabled people (refuse to fix the elevator) and I hope to see new management come in and rebirth this place to what it’s supposed to be. SHAME ON YOU
Experiência negativa: After learning about the conditions of the workplace (MOLD !! WHERE ARTWORK IS HELD) and the treatment of employees AND customers, I will never support this museum. What a shame to claim to showcase beautiful Mexican art, but treat Hispanic staff and customers with disrespect. Something NEEDS to be done about management here and the conditions of this place. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME HERE!
Experiência fantástica: I wanted to check the dia de los muertos but it was too late. Right now there's no current exhibit until February. But I've been before, y me ha gustado. I agree this place needs public funding to support renovations of the building which seems to be historic.
Experiência fantástica: A small yet impactful museum full of wonderfully curated art. Had the pleasure of visiting during the "Dia de Los Muertos" / "Day of the Dead" Exhibition. Went on a Sunday, and admission was free, but I left a donation, and it was appreciated. Would highly recommend a partonship to this museum if a local or visiting Austin - it's small so it won't take all day.
Experiência fantástica: Beautiful artwork! Very quant loved the variety of merchandise! It’s free on Sundays that’s a plus! Staff was pleasant!
Experiência fantástica: Excellent small museum with a nice collection. Loved the Posada prints and altars. Nice gift shop, too.
Experiência positiva: Walking down Congress and stumbled across this gem! Great exhibit around this time of year highlighting the Dia le los Muertos traditions. Cute gift shop. Prices a little high for things like a reusable bag so chose smaller sticker items to still show support.
Experiência negativa: meh - doesn’t help the older lady in the gift shop is incredibly rude.
Experiência fantástica: Unexpected surprise. Enjoyed the opportunity!
Experiência fantástica: Didn’t get to enjoy the collection because they were setting up for the Día de Los Muertos parade. But we saw them setting up the floats, checked out the shop, and talked to some friendly folks. Super cool. And the piña colada paleta was delish.
Experiência positiva: Much smaller than i expected. Some very nice pieces never the less
Experiência fantástica: It's such a wonderful museum and with the best store.
Experiência fantástica: Celebrate the 40th Anniversary of this iconic museum. The new Dia De Los Muertos exhibits are up, and better than ever!
Isn't it! We are so happy to hear about your positive experience at our museum!
Experiência fantástica: Great museum!
Experiência fantástica: The art was beautiful and the staff was very friendly. Loved the shop.
Experiência fantástica: The Museum was an interesting surprise for our first time in Austin. The Día de Muertos exhibition is really beautiful. We really enjoyed our visit.
Experiência fantástica: Always wanted to go to the Dia de los Muertos display and it did not disappoint. The museum is much larger than expected too.
Experiência positiva: This was a great find off 5th Street in Austin, TX. The museum is free on Sundays. The gift shop was a bit pricey but had a ton of cute merchandise. I did purchase a t-shirt and stickers.
Experiência fantástica: One of Austin's best art museums. They do a great job of involving local artists, especially in their murals and Dia De Los Muertos altars. They also have a great gift shop and are open free on Sundays. It's worth visiting this place regularly as their exhibits turn over.
Experiência fantástica: They are closed until next month (was cool to walk around gift shop), but looking forward to experiencing this museum once it opens back up.
Experiência negativa: CLOSED TILL SEP 16TH 2023 sadly we ddint get to see anything exciting.
Experiência fantástica: Super cool and interesting museum! Unfortunately, I went when the gallery was closed but from what I saw when I peaked it, it looked awesome :3 The gift has some really neat stuff too!
Experiência positiva: The staff were very welcoming and courteous. The exhibits were diverse and easy to observe for a variety of heights. This would be a wonderful investment for the city to expand further.
Experiência fantástica: Great museum, follow their social media pages to checkout special events, which are more intimate and allow you to meet the staff, artists, and network. The annual Dia de los Muertos parade they host Downtown is amazing!
Experiência fantástica: Really cozy museum with beautiful pieces of art. Highly recommend it for anyone visiting Austin!
Experiência positiva: Nice little art exhibit. Went in thinking it was going to have artifacts, but it contains works of art and recreations of artifacts.
Experiência fantástica: Free entry certain days of the week. Nice Mexican-American museum with a strong focus on the immigrant experience.
Experiência negativa: It's not really a museum, more like a store, I have been there 3 times, and I haven't been able to see any exhibit
Experiência fantástica: This is a wonderful, small museum. Perhaps a bit more of an art gallery experience (no art work for sale), it has a great cross section of underrepresented artists of Mexican ancestry
Experiência fantástica: Wonderful museum!! Lots of fantastic art, both classic and contemporary. Wheelchair accessible. Staff was friendly and attentive! Price for entry: $7.00 Ticket type: Adult tickets
Experiência negativa: It was underwhelming at best. There are a few decent pieces. If you plan to go, set your expectations to low. I would have thought the city that hosts SXSW would have better galleries.
Experiência fantástica: Was a nice display of different styles of artists. Really enjoyed it on our trip to Texas. Don't forget to check out their gift shop as well.
Experiência fantástica: I had a great time visiting this little gem. It was on my to-do list while visiting Austin for a convention. Rich in culture and history. Also, the girl at the desk was very friendly.
Experiência fantástica: Great little museum in downtown focused on Mexican art. It does bring in artists local to Texas or other Hispanic countries, but the main focus is Mexican culture/Art. Free on sundays. I’d come back here one a quarter to see what is new and appreciate the art that is out there now.
Experiência negativa: 7 dollars to see two murales. The person at the ticket desk told us only after purchasing the tickets that another exhibition was being prepared but the museum still looked extremely small and empty and definitely not worth the prize.
Experiência fantástica: Very nice place with lots of fun artisanal pieces from Mexico and also interesting Mexican art. I was sceptic on the place but for my surprise I could found very cool stuff. A good touch id their guided tours in English and Spanish. Very very happy that I stopped and enter.
Experiência positiva: The gallery was full of college student tour groups. They blocked many of the art exhibits, and unfortunately the guides were not cognizant of non-tour visitors. So, I missed several of the exhibits. I’d suggest making sure there’s no large tour groups visiting the gallery, before paying the entry fee.
Experiência fantástica: This place has some really cool exhibits. The art is very beautiful and lots of information in the pieces. They are adding more stuff currently, and will definitely stop by when in town again to see the other new pieces. I love the different arts they have, from pictures, sculptures, paintings, and more. They even have some video exhibits. Worth a visit.
Experiência positiva: Keep in mind this is a pretty small museum. The exhibitions are very colorful, vibrant and diverse. the reduced star is not because of its size (sometimes it's the smaller special museums that are the best!), but rather - something there I feel wasn't done right in the side of the explanation. Artistic objects there have some sort of a plain paper glued on the wall with just tons of text in small font that fails to convey the idea behind the art installation, or too tedious to read or understand. The explanations in my opinions have to be more friendly, more interactive, and perhaps to make some logical order that makes more sense in the sequence of visiting the museum. Currently it looks like a collection of items (very amazing items though!) but with non-coherent relation or explanation as to what one sees. Some shorter but better info would help appreciate the items and the museum as a whole even more.
Experiência positiva: Cool place, but too small to call it an art experience in my opinion.
Experiência fantástica: Local Non-Profit museum that showcases Mexican Folk Art and contemporary pieces. It was a lovely collection.
Experiência positiva: Great small gallery! Doesn't take long but worth the $7
Experiência fantástica: This is a great Mexican heritage art museum. I took my small group of students here. Everything is open, meaning no cases to protect the work. This worries me a little to protect the work. Love the gift shop. Parking right across the street, no attendant. Cost $22 for 2 hour parking.
Experiência fantástica: Loved this little museum in the middle of downtown, well worth the time to see every exhibit, and the gift shop is nice as well!
Experiência positiva: Nice small museum, was free when I went on a sunday
Experiência fantástica: Worth a stop. Very impressive. Tons of artist displays and genres.
Experiência fantástica: The art was wonderful here! We went as part of our day trip and really enjoyed it
Experiência fantástica: A great museum in downtown Austin with a rotating exhibit of works from Mexican artists. It's approachable in size, and can be explored in about an hour - and admission is free on Sundays (and really, it's a pretty reasonable price on other days).
Experiência positiva: Small but very nice art museum. I love the stories behind each piece and enjoyed hearing of the traditions. Would definitely recommend this as place to visit. Is at the corner of Congress and 5th. There are lockers to place your items in and safeguard personal items.
Experiência fantástica: There is normally an admission fee, but we were able to get in free admission because of a concert they had. I would recommend signing up for their email newsletters to keep you in the loop about events there. The people upfront were super helpful and friendly. The space is filled with art from all over artisans in Mexico. Everything is on display and I would definitely recommend this for all tourist and locals to check out. The gift shop is a great place to go and grab a birthday card or a birthday gift, if you are a part of the Mexican culture, you will love this place. They had a Huapango concert, I mean, that is very unique!
Experiência fantástica: Beautiful museum. A great place showcasing Mexican-American artists within a respectful space. It's very welcoming, and I love the natural feel of the place. They do different exhibits often, so there's always something new to see. The shop is fun at the end of your visit (the stickers are my favorite). Great displays and information cards. You can often buy the art, so it's wonderful to have the opportunity to obtain some of the artists' works! Highly recommend for any guests or locals who haven't visited!
Experiência fantástica: beautiful exhibits, wonderful artisan work from all over mexico! lovely gift shop where you can buy artisan pieces! wonderful showing of mexican art and culture
Experiência fantástica: Lovely museum with cute gift shop. Host at the front was friendly, and the exhibits themselves are great. Only one floor of content, but I spent about an hour and a half just absorbing everything.
Experiência fantástica: Great little museum and gift shop.
Experiência fantástica: Free on Sundays and beautiful tribute to Uvalde and gorgeous exhibit and absolutely a must see. There's a lovely gift shop as well.
Experiência fantástica: Just happened upon while walking. Free on Sundays. It's small, but has a great gallery. I would definitely go back.
Experiência fantástica: Excellently curated museum. Great gift shop. Small museum but quality of art is high.
Experiência fantástica: Surprisingly insightful, awe-inspiring! Going back - loved the Gift Store, too. [Visited on 3-1-2022].
Experiência fantástica: Gorgeous place- excellent museum shop. Staff are friendly and helpful. Wonderful experience.
Experiência fantástica: Excellent experience. Though do check what exactly is on exhibit. Their permanent collection is small. Gift shop is fun
Experiência fantástica: By far one of the best hispanic museums. It was very interesting to learn more about Mexican Americans in Austin.
Experiência fantástica: Important resistance and art history by and of the people of Chicano/Mexican-American lineage. Beautiful and informative, diverse combination of paintings, photos and artifacts.
Experiência fantástica: Such a wonderful little place with a great gift shop. We were there on a Monday morning and it was free entrance before 1pm.
Experiência fantástica: Great museum, a bit small and an easy walk through. Excellent gift shop supporting Latinx artists. Great exhibits with long and thoughtful write-ups on Indigenous Mexican people's and contemporary Mexican culture.
Experiência fantástica: Small, but full of charm and beautiful colorful authentic Mexican art. Enjoyed the guided tour and the stories, especially the ones about La Llorona and La Malinche. Went on a Sunday, no fee. Exotic items and interesting flavored chocolate at the gift shop. Very warm and attentive staff.
Experiência fantástica: We visited the Chicano movement exhibit. A beautiful gallery that is surprisingly bigger than you would think from just walking up. Beautiful works of art and photography that is also beautifully spaced and displayed throughout the museum.
Experiência negativa: I checked out the gift shop and was going to tour the museum but I couldn’t seem to get the attention of either staff members glued to their phones. It’s not great for business when staff don’t acknowledge the existence of customers. I feel like anyone could have walked through the door and robbed the entire place and the staff wouldn’t have looked up from their phones once. I appreciate the museums recognition of that style of art.
Experiência positiva: Really neat place. I didn't get to go through the museum but could see some of it and it looked really neat. I bought some items in the gift shop. They were pretty expensive but they had a lot of cool items. I ended up buying several items. Lots of Frida items who is one of my favorite artists. Highly recommend it. I plan on going back and take the museum tour.
Experiência negativa: Not a very big art gallery. Most of the art was unimpressive to me.
Experiência fantástica: Beautiful art work and a unique environment experience.
Experiência fantástica: Amazing art from local artists and those from around the world. A true Austin institution. Plus... hello? Gift shop! an affordable and enlightening outing for the whole family. Get yo culture on!
Experiência positiva: Its a nice place but we expected to see more honestly. 2 years ago we went to viva la vida and was very nice. Price is fair $7 per person and $1 for little ones. Good paintings and colorful walls!
Experiência fantástica: It was a beautiful experience. The art and stories touched my heart, and taught me so many things. I encourage anyone in Austin to take a look around Mexic-Arte Museum.
Experiência fantástica: This is relatively small space which struck me as more of a gallery, than a museum, but their website incidates that they have an extensive collection, presumably just not the space or ability to keep more on view. Currently there is a photo exhibit documenting the late 70s Chicano movement. This includes a great photo of a young Amado Pena standing next to Cesar Chavez. Several of Pena's pieces and some movement posters he designed are included as well. There is also fabulous series of paintings by Carolina Flores. These are large and somewhat abstracted canvasses. Her work captures the dignity and nostalgia of Chicano family portraits from what appears to be early 20th century. Free on Sundays and pretty good gift store.
Experiência fantástica: From a 2020 article: "Unseen Prints from the Mexic-Arte Museum Collection" will feature various forms of printmaking from serigraphs to lithography. There are additional shows running concurrently with "Unseen Prints." 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m/Friday and Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday through March 1. Free-$10. 419 Congress Ave. mexic-artemuseum.org
Experiência fantástica: Been coming here for years; every time I visit there is nothing repeated, new exhibits always. Today my dad and I saw the Chicano 60's to 80's exhibit, well worth going! Absolutely beautiful paintings.
Experiência fantástica: Small place but overall nice. Has a cover for most days but it's cheap. Sundays are free. It's nice how it covers the local anti-klan movement and the resistance to government.
