Experiência positiva: A free art museum with a small but strong collection. It is part of Brandeis University and closed during most of the summer. There is a Frida Kahlo painting in the main collection. Really enjoyed the exhibit that is a recreation of a collector's room, which has several small and eccentric objects in room that looks like it is from the 1950s.
Experiência fantástica: It's a small museum on the Brandeis campus but for a small museum, it has an impressive collection. There are also a bunch of staff available to answer any question. Admission is free. They have an Andy Warhol and a piece by Yoko Ono. It's what I would call modern art, which is generally not my cup of tea; however, I did enjoy this museum and it's small enough that you don't get lost and overwhelmed as has occured to me in other museums like MOMA or SFMOMA. If you are near the Brandeis campus, I would definitely swing by there and take a look around. I understand they also give guided tours if that is more your thing.
Experiência fantástica: Small museum but free is my favorite price.
Experiência fantástica: Smallish art museum on the Brandeis campus. Completely free with free parking but there is a donation box. Fairly empty on a Saturday. There is no cafe. Wonderful assortment of artwork including a Picasso. There is a space with very high ceilings in the back of the building where you can find a large collection of excellent contemporary art. This part is the jewel of the museum as far as I am concerned. It rivals the ICA in many ways. You can see everything in about an hour. Bring your children or the grandparents.
Experiência fantástica: This art museum is a small gem with really intriguing special exhibits.
Experiência positiva: Lovely gem of a museum. Very limited parking BUT the few spaces are VERY close to the front door.
Experiência fantástica: Came to see Salman Toor's No Ordinary Love, which was incredible. Overall a wonderful collection and space. Student attendants/staff were wonderful, well-informed and gracious. I feel very fortunate to have access to this kind of institution.
Experiência fantástica: Small but very quality works and presentation/display around rotating themes. Plan to spend up to an hour unless there is something specific you are interested in. The Rose is much more than a small university art museum home for donated works. Be sure to register (free) on line before visiting.
Experiência positiva: Thought provoking
Experiência positiva: More Frida's works than the blue house owns.
Experiência fantástica: The Rose Museum curates wonderful art shows. Their own collection is stunning.
Experiência fantástica: The Rose Museum has a remarkable art collection, acquired since the late 1940s.
Experiência fantástica: Wonderful place to visit. Multiple exhibitions of diversee artists-
Experiência fantástica: Great university museum with an excellent decolonized re-hang of their permanent collection
너무 좋았어요
Experiência positiva: There is so much to see can’t wait to visit.
Experiência fantástica: What a gem! World class art in an accessible location with easy parking and free admission! What more could you want?
Experiência fantástica: Great exhibit, not crowded.
Experiência fantástica: Absolutely wonderful, small museum with terrific works of art and great staff! Take it from Professor Jan, as I work in a major NY museum, This is a terrific experience to visit the Rose Art Museum.
Experiência fantástica: First time there . It encompassed Slavery and the Holocaust ~ very very moving to say the least. Out of respect to the artists the photos are not close up of any of their work, other than the neon sign. Photos wouldn't do them justice.
Experiência fantástica: Exhilirating, carefully curated collection of contemporary art at Brandeis University. The current exhibit of feminist 3D paintings by Persian artist Arghavan Khosravi complements the permanent collection beautifully. Guards are knowledgeable and can offer history and insights - don't be afraid to chat! The free admission caps the deal: a small gem of a museum.
Experiência negativa: This museum believes it’s appropriate to display the face and name of a mass shooter. There is no BS context the “artist” could create that would justify putting the likeness of this sociopath on the wall of a museum. That one disgusting image ruined my entire experience. Thx Rose Art Museum
Experiência positiva: Rose Art Museum is located at Brandies University, it is free and open to the public. There’s a small parking area in front of the museum which towards the back of the campus along the loop road. The modern/contemporary collection is among the best in New England. Since Covid- they’ve been mostly spotlighting the permanent collection and you’ll find works from Frida Kahlo to Matthew Barney. A good selection of minimal and color field works as well. It’s a great little museum to check out- a small gallery on the first floor and then some larger rooms downstairs. Plus it’s only 20 minutes from Boston. Thumbs up
Experiência fantástica: Small Museum but decent display of contemporary Art I enjoyed myself.
Experiência fantástica: Una pequeña galería pero llena de mucho arte y excelente ubicación para admirar las exhibiciones
Experiência fantástica: Very welcoming staff, nice venue. Interesting exhibits. Brief but fun.
Experiência fantástica: Good mix of eclectic art. Worth going!
Experiência positiva: What an absolute gem! The permanent collection and exhibits are amazingly well curated.
Experiência fantástica: Contemporary art museum with revolving exhibits a decent personal collection; and did I mention, it's FREE?
Experiência fantástica: The Rose Art Museum has events and exhibits which are not always readily available at other venues.
Experiência negativa: Seriously? It's April 2022 and you still have this many covid protocols for visiting your museum? Thanks, I'll pass.
Experiência fantástica: Big enough to have more than one exhibit, small enough to not be overwhelming. Both the permanent and temporary collection are well laid out and the space is architecturally subtle and interesting.
Experiência positiva: A very small museum in a nice setting. Worth seeing if you are on campus but not traveling for. That said the temporary exhibit Displaced with Strangeness by Raida Adon is outstanding.
Experiência fantástica: From today's visit at the musueum! Not that many people in today.
Experiência fantástica: Very different Gallery of art!!
Experiência fantástica: I can't believe it was free to see a few of my favorites pieces of art in person
Experiência fantástica: Small museum. Lots of modern artist. Very interesting and enjoyable
Experiência fantástica: Amazing selection of some stunning and evocative pieces!
Experiência fantástica: Wonderful little art museum. Currently with the best Frida Kahlo exhibit I've seen, better than the MFA one. An art treaaure in the suburbs.
Experiência fantástica: Wonderful, small, museum with first class art works. Free parking on site.
Experiência fantástica: Fascinating exhibits, I really liked it, given that I am mediocre in art.
Experiência fantástica: It's a well thought collection presented very elegantly and fluently in a small but immersing space.
Experiência fantástica: What an absolute gem! The permanent collection and exhibits are amazingly well curated. Because of the pandemic, entrance is time limited.
Experiência fantástica: One of Boston's best-kept open secrets, along with the MIT Museum. Free admission, and a staff that genuinely is happy to see you and to knowledgeably discuss the artworks on view, if you are so inclined. Otherwise, the staff stay out of your way, and discreetly move aside if you want to take any photos. The Rose usually features temporary exhibitions and/or rotating selections from their permanent collection of works from the 1950s through today. Always check their website to see what is on view, when they are open, and any COVID-related restrictions. As of Summer 2021, a broad survey show exhibits art selected from their permanent collection, including works by Warhol, Kusama, Mendieta, Ono, Magritte, Marisol, Sherman, Oldenburg, deKooning, Stettheimer, Davis, Lichtenstein, Barney, Kandinsky, Wilson, and Louis. In addition, there is a small but very noteworthy temporary show of Frida Kahlo, organized by the director of the museum, who clearly is an expert on her life and artworks. The show offers an overview of her life for novices, as well as unusual insights and glimpses, including rarely-seen works gleaned from private collections. Two of the last paintings done before her death are exhibited, as well as a photo of her largest artwork, now lost or destroyed.
Experiência fantástica: Lovely small museum with varied and interesting collections. Online appointments help space out visitors so it's not crowded and feels safe. Friendly and knowledgeable staff.
Experiência fantástica: Small but yet great exhibition!
Experiência fantástica: Art lovers who don't run to the Rose to see the special exhibit of art by Arghavan Khosravi, titled "Black Rain", will regret missing it. We first encountered her work last year at the Currier in Manchester NH, and were blown away. Everyone we knew who saw it felt the same. Now she's at the Rose. For a relatively short time only, unfortunately. We were thrilled to see so many new pieces that weren't at the Currier. And they're amazing in their creativity, power and beauty. Khosravi has a unique voice, one that will appeal to a almost everyone. See her stuff now, cause in a few years you'll be standing in lines and paying big money for her exhibitions. We were also thrilled with the new additions on display from the permanent collection. Real gems, both dramatic and hysterically funny. And the staff were very helpful in guiding us and providing background information on the art. The last three years the Rose has featured several really engaging showings. Get your name on their mailing list for advance notice.
Experiência fantástica: A lovely small collection. Quite a who's who in 20th century art. A lovely Frida Kahlo exhibit was on when we went.
Experiência fantástica: The museum has some wonderful pieces in its permanent exhibit!
Experiência fantástica: Excellent and comprehensive Freda Kahlo exhibit. Much more detail and expansive display of her life and works.
Experiência fantástica: I didn’t know what to expect, my husband found this museum and we quickly secured tickets for the next day on our way out of Boston. I was really delightfully surprised with the eclectic collection of interesting art. The highlight for me was the terrific Frida Kahlo exhibit. Some of the items in the permanent collection were a little bit less accessible/interesting for me but I enjoyed browsing through everything. We probably spent a good two or three hours exploring the museum, and on top of all that it was completely free! How great is that? I did want to add that there is a somewhat strange feeling one may get from being stared at by the guards. I saw this referenced in a couple of earlier reviews. I get it, they need to make sure that people are not touching or getting too close to the art but I’ve been to many museums all over the world and honestly never had this feeling of being stared at.
Experiência fantástica: Really lovely museum - diverse collection of modern art. Currently a special exhibit on Frida Kahlo. One of the few university museums to open up with precautions. You must sign up on line - with only 20 people admitted per hour, good social distancing. Masks required. Parking nearby and very easy in the summer. Admission is free, donations accepted at the door but no pressure.
Experiência fantástica: Ok
Experiência positiva: Great but can be very confusing and slow for some.
Experiência fantástica: The mid-century building by Harrison and Abramovitz adds to the experience of viewing art. I was unfamiliar with Howardena Pindell and appreciated the opportunity to see a range of her work and learn about her life.
Experiência fantástica: great modern art. Both buildings designed by world-class architects.
Experiência fantástica: Excellent curatorial walk-through of the current Howardena Pindell restrospective exhibit.
Experiência fantástica: Great museum, great collection, beautiful location, fantastic staff! Definitely worth visiting.
Experiência fantástica: It was truly an experience. The art is in order from latest to newest. The passage at the end of the tour brings it all together. It helps give better understanding to why those pieces were selected.
Experiência fantástica: More wine and liquor choices than one should have!
Experiência fantástica: Lovely museum #art
Experiência fantástica: Beautiful museum. Loved the art.
Experiência fantástica: A very nice two story art museum. The space was completely dedicated to the works of Howerdena Pindell and covered a very wide range of her work.
Experiência fantástica: Friendly, accessible and interesting. Art that focuses on social issues.
Experiência positiva: A bit pretentious
Experiência positiva: A hidden treasure.
Experiência positiva: It was much smaller than I expected but the art was memorable.
Experiência positiva: Strangest and most awkward experience I have ever had at a museum. The moment my friend and I got downstairs, we were being started at by the student workers (I assume that's who it was with it being on a university). We were told we could not point at the art work. I can understand no touching but pointing? My friend was trying to point something out for me to see in the piece of art and he got told not to. After that moment, an older gentleman and the girl who told us not to point, followed us around and stared at us the entire visit. Every turn we made, one of them would be right there making sure they could see us. They never once stopped staring, even as a glanced at them with a puzzled look. It was so awkward and strange to be stared at like that as if we were doing something wrong. I felt like we were not welcome there! The museum was small but had beautiful and interesting exhibits. I will never go back though.
Experiência positiva: A hidden Gem One reviewer clearly didn't see the gorgeous wing built in 2001 (Really people you needn't take your crankiness out in reviews) From the Rose website: "Lois Foster Wing, Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University The original Master Plan for Brandeis University was developed by Eero Saarinen and featured individual buildings atop the hilly, pastoral setting as temples, rejecting the traditional closed collegiate quadrangle model. The pavilion-like original Art Museum, built in 1961, is a classic International Style structure. The first phase of the program called for expansion of the 15,000-square-foot museum in an addition of 8,800 square feet." The buildings will reveal many surprises talk to the lovely student docents! I was looking at a complicated black metal "flat" (is that called relief?) and wasn't sure what to think beyond "that's cool" only to have a student come up and explain to me the artist's message and background. It was a revelation once I understood the slave imagery. All these little hidden aspects! I was meeting my son, a student (no I'm not biased. He had nothing to do with the museum) and his buddy who did, laughed at me because I am very uncomfortable with open stairs or worse, walking on glass floors. He explained the Wildest story! An art instillation in 2013 included mirrors and glass. It was so beloved they kept it (entry at desk) : "Walead Beshty has created a mirror and glass floor that runs throughout both levels of the building. The thin top layer of glass will crack as visitors walk through the museum. “The glass actually cracks under pressure, so you participate in the production of art,” Bedford says. “The marks made by our various visitors will become a permanent record.” Not for me! What could be worse than cracking glass?? I Always found parking in the circular driveway directly in front of the Rose. Brandeis is, for better or worse, a one way system. Off South Street they force you right. Just continue along and you'll see the Castle, various department buildings, student affairs (crosswalk!) Winding up and down past the temple and green Saarinen designed campus. Eventually the Rose will be on your right. You're already going slowly due to students and obtrusive wild turkeys, so don't miss the museum pull around! Enjoy your time. Waltham has many treasures make this one. Free.
Experiência positiva: They do have a small collection but still if you have time go look they do have lots of parking a short walk away next to the building is for disabled parking. The gallery is set on 2 floors with also a workshop and moving gallery as well.
Experiência fantástica: Great modern art museum, right on the Brandeis campus with free admission. They have a changing collection of contemporary art on display that is well-curated, and the museum often brings in artists for talks. They also have stools for students who want to sit and observe or draw the art.
Experiência fantástica: Nice little museum with a great collection.
Experiência fantástica: Friendly staff. Free, but there is a donation box if you would like to leave one. Friendly and knowledgeable docents. Wide variety of artists and mediums. Well curated.
Experiência positiva: Large variety of art on different media
Experiência fantástica: Small but we'll curated collection
Experiência fantástica: Beautiful exhibits
Experiência fantástica: Beautiful exhibits
Experiência positiva: It's modern art. Loud, disturbing, and random. I was hoping to learn something about the art form, but despite being in an educational institute, I guess it's not that kind of place. I left as ignorant as I entered, having no real impression to share.
