Experiencia fantástica: Focused museum, very much worth the visit if you have any interest in Japanese wood block art.

Experiencia fantástica: Great museum with original organization to help make the art interesting! Good english explanations inside too. Sometimes gets crowded on rainy days, but it’s worth it.

Experiencia fantástica: Very low-key, nice museum. Takes less than an hour to get through but every exhibition is wonderful.

Experiencia fantástica: Small museum with an amazing ukiyo-e collection of over 20,000 prints. A must visit for ukiyo-e art lovers. Spans the history and many painting/printing schools and artists from this tradition. Rotating themed exhibits to support Ota’s vast collection support multiple repeat visits.

Experiencia fantástica: I'm usually not a fan of museums but this was very good. A very relaxed, quiet and casual atmosphere to observe and read about the interesting artworks. I really enjoyed this. Not everything is translated to English though which is should be corrected.

Experiencia fantástica: A quiet sanctuary in an overcrowed area

Experiencia fantástica: Wonderful museum of Ukiyo-e, the Japanese art of woodblock printing. Beautifully presented and with good explanations in English it provides fascinating insights into a quintessential Japanese art form which influenced many western painters and comic book artists.

Experiencia fantástica: This is a very interesting spot to cool off in the summer and appreciate wood block prints. The space is a little small but I found even with the summer crowds I could go at my own pace and it was a very quiet environment. Definitely a great stop for art fans in Harajuku.

Ben Sill 6 years ago

Experiencia fantástica: The museum has a large collection, but the exhibition space is small. The exhibit changes regularly with different themes, so there is often something new to explore. Definitely check this out If you enjoy ukiyo-e.

Experiencia fantástica: It is a 4 or a 5 if you are interested in Ukioy-e...first visit 2 years ago definitely a 5 since I was almost the only one there, but today (holiday) it had more visitors and it was tedious to view the works. The light makes it hard to see details unless you stand very close and that is difficult with a queue circling the gallery. They rotate the exhibits so it is worth revisiting from.time to time. 1000 yen per person. Nice gift shop.

Experiencia fantástica: Nice smallish museum with traditional wood block prints and how they were made.

Experiencia fantástica: A beautiful gallery, showcasing some brilliant pieces of artwork with interesting information about their creation. Very quiet and subdued with 3 levels to enjoy at your leisure, and very helpful staff.

Experiencia fantástica: Nice little musuem showcasing his works. Two floors and a basement with some more. Costs 1000¥ to enter also has a shop and books at the top to purchase.

Experiencia fantástica: Very very good museum. Curious. I enjoyed it a lot. Smell but the pictures are beautiful: birds, flowers, trees, animals, drawn with a particular technique, explained inside. Cozy museum

Experiencia fantástica: The art moved me to tears, it was a lovely collection and a quiet and contemplative atmosphere. Very much recommend!

Experiencia fantástica: Compact little museum with interesting and we'll curated exhibitions. There are coin lockers available and a gift shop in the basement. Price of entry is dependent on the exhibition.

Experiencia fantástica: I love that the collection rotates. There is always something new to see. A peaceful way to spend an hour or two when in the Harajuku area.

Experiencia fantástica: Excellent small museum which is very affordable at 1000 yen. The current ukiyo-e exhibit had quite a few pieces which I have not viewed before ( had gone to the ones in Milan at The Cuomo museum, Brit Museum etc). The current exhibit is on the first and basement floor. The gift shop was a good surprised. Full of Okinawan batik like prints and handmade items. No photos allowed in order to preserve the art. The collection is rotated frequently. Although the great wave print here is smaller than the one in the Clavell collection, it is still impactful.

Experiencia fantástica: Nice surprise. The museum houses a ton of Ukiyo-e style illustrations. It was made very nicely to display and house everything. The staff was also very kind helping me locate a book with a certain illustration in it. Would recommend it for classic art lovers.

Experiencia fantástica: Amazing! More of a gallery than museum (three rooms), but the exhibit was fantastic. Gorgeous, dynamic prints in a variety that we don't usually get a chance to see back in the West. Highly recommend!

Experiencia fantástica: 浮世絵は素晴らしかったです。There are almost full English guides to the prints. They have two permanent exhibition rooms and one for visiting exhibitions. ¥1,000 entry, and there's a nice gift shop for Japanese wrapping cloths.

Experiencia fantástica: Great small museum/gallery. Great English descriptions for most pieces. I love wood block prints in general but was impressed with the amazing detail and quality of the old prints here. I would return for the rotating gallery.

Experiencia fantástica: Smallish museums of prints, if you're into that kind of stuff. Very interesting selection which changes every month or so. This way, you probably won't be able to see Hokusai's wave, but quite a few interesting works. All the prints are explained in Japanese AND English. Very helpful! At the entrance you can buy art books and postcards, small shop downstairs sells printed cloths, tax-free for foreigners.

Experiencia fantástica: Small but great museum with very broad and unusual collection of ukiyoe. Any time you visit you will see something new.

Experiencia fantástica: Ukiyo-e of the masters Hiroshige. Displayed lovingly. Perfect English explanations.

Experiencia fantástica: 6/5! Most beautiful exhibition I've seen, the staff is SO nice and the price is reasonable. Plus it's in the middle of harakuju !

Experiencia fantástica: real ukiyoe museum. must go! the towel shop on first basement is good, too.

Experiencia fantástica: If you have any interest in Ukyo-e art this is a great museum to visit. It's a fairly small museum so it can be a easy stop if you are in the Harajuku area. Also the gift shop is small but has a really nice selection of things that make great souvenirs. They also sell reproduction prints. However, they won't ship, so if you have any interest and don't have the luggage space ask at the desk and they will give you information on the gallery they get the reproductions from and maybe they can ship.

Experiencia fantástica: I loved this museum, although it has more of a gallery feel. The exhibition is on two floors, showing a variety of traditional woodblock prints from the late Seizō Ota V's personal collection. He collected them as an important cultural property of Japan. It's ¥‎700 to enter, which sounds a lot for a small two floor museum, but it's so expertly presented it's worth it. The prints are shown in the perfect manner. The lighting is dim in the room, then the prints are lit from inside the glass cabinets. This means that the prints are clear and there isn't glare on the glass, and they're lit from an angle from lighting above so you can appreciate the subtle embossing of the paper that occurs when printed in the traditional Japanese style. Most museums don't bother lighting the prints and just allow the room lighting to do the work, which flattens the image and doesn't show the full quality. As the prints are fragile and many of them are over a hundred and fifty years old the exhibition is rotated monthly. Check the website for what's on, and for their opening times, as they are closed inconsistently for several days a month. It's ¥‎700 to see some of the highest quality woodblock prints ever made, in the most expert presentation I've ever seen. Go.
