Experiencia fantástica: Very good museum with very varied exhibitions: Architectural elements of the cathedral, Paintings, Some really incredible tapestries, A replica of the famous botafumeiro... Unfortunately it is not allowed to take photos inside, only on the ground floor and in the open spaces. It has 4 floors and is really worth your visit.

Experiencia fantástica: Recommended and almost mandatory place if you are sightseeing in Santiago. In this museum you will see countless ancient objects and learn about the history of the cathedral in detail.

Experiencia fantástica: The museum is worth visiting. I would only recommend that tourists be advised if taking photos inside is prohibited

Experiencia fantástica: The museum is very interesting, especially the reconstruction of the original choir, which is magnificent. We took it together with the visit to the Portico de la Gloria, which is already directly out of category, an authentic medieval marvel that is a luxury to see. With the portico of glory it is necessary to reserve it in advance and also go to the place in advance, since until you get to the portico it takes a while (not much) and the time of stay is limited.

Experiencia positiva: Nice museum in case you are interested in religious art. The architecture is also nice. As usual, hardly any English explanations or a QR code for further explanations. Two major minus points: 1: no English speaking personal at the cashier: for me a no-go in such famous museum. 2: the tickets can bought as combination with other attractions like the portico. We heard of the the visit of the museum and need to buy new tickets including the museum again!! For me a complete no-go! At the cashier side I found indeed a small price table in fontsize 10. Why not a large sign with all combinations? So easy and will avoid above situations.

Experiencia fantástica: A tremendous experience. Along with my girlfriend, I had already visited the Museum of the Cathedral of Santiago a few years ago. On this occasion, Sunday May 15, taking advantage of the fact that the Camino by bicycle had finished the day before, from my home in Jaca (Huesca), I made a long, pleasant and detailed visit to the Museum. It is simply extraordinary, with pieces of great value. In addition to the content of the Museum itself, we must not forget the great added value conferred by its location. The visit, on a rainy day, like that, with the bells ringing... The staff at the entrance could not be more friendly and pleasant. The paradox occurred, when buying the ticket (€15), that when my status as "pilgrim" and "pensioner" accumulated, the price remained at €4. They told me that if I had been a university student, I would get free. Already laughing, I told them that yes, it was, that "in old age, smallpox...". We all laughed heartily and I went in. In the end, poor things, they almost paid me to enter! Apart from anecdotes, well, that's a wonderful place. Thank you very much.

Experiencia fantástica: It allows a better understanding of the history of the Cathedral of Santiago. Valuable exhibition of architectural elements, religious art and Goyesque tapestries. The best: the cloister, the bells and the view of the Obradoiro from the upper balcony.

Experiencia fantástica: The entrance is through the Praça do Obradoiro and is the historical, artistic and archaeological museum of the Basilica of Santiago. the treasure, the chapel of the relics, the collection of carpets and the crypt of the Portico da Gloria and the Palace of Gelmírez. It is very interesting, complete and has wonderful views of the Praça do Obradoiro, the towers and bells of the Cathedral and the region!

Experiencia fantástica: The entrance to the museum is if you buy the one from the Portico de la Gloria, which is worth €12, you get the one from the museum for free. For children, the one in the museum is free but you have to pay for the one in the porch, a bit expensive but worth it. It takes you through the history of Mestre Mateo and through the history of the cathedral there are some terraces where there are very good views of the square apart from there are iconography collections of Virgins, Saints, Santiagos Matamoros etc. You can visit the Cloister of the Cathedral, the Archive, the archbishop's offices and a collection of Goya tapestries. There is also a clothing room for masses and a donation from Don Juan de Austria which is a part of a ship that fought in Lepanto. You can also see the royal crypt and the reliquary. Apart from the magnificent Portico de la Gloria from the workshop of Mestre Mateo with polychromies from the 11th - 12th century. In Plaza do Obradoiro there is a crypt that can be visited with the museum ticket.

Experiencia fantástica: A must visit, at least once, as the cathedral is impressive, both outside and inside. It has a lot of curiosities and history that are worth knowing, so it is advisable to take a guided tour.

Experiencia fantástica: The museum of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela offers many different pieces of art related to the cathedral and beyond. Apart from the many liturgical items on display, one can find multiple rooms full of tapestries (including scenes originally drawn by Goya), art from as early as the 12th century, the unusual raised cloister of the cathedral and an exhibition on the important medieval sculptor who built the Portico of the cathedral (Mestre Mateo). Well worth the cost of the ticket and can easily fill a whole day.

Experiencia fantástica: Complete and detailed museum related to the cathedral, there are spectacular pieces and price two tapestries, as usual in these siti you can't take pictures but still deserve It is worth the visit you have to see more than it seems. You can take pictures in the beautiful cloister.

Experiencia fantástica: Well worth it to learn more about the history of the Cathedral & Santiago & you get access to parts which are not open to public like the terrace looking down on Obradoiro Square.Musuem was opened in 1930 and it’s here that you can access the Cathedral cloister, in which canons continue to be buried, parts of the original Archbishop’s palace and a balcony on the third floor overlooking Praza do Obradoiro and nearby buildings. The museum is also home to a large tapestry collection and a display of vestments. Valuable church artefacts can be seen in the Treasury.

Experiencia fantástica: A complete tour through the history of art through archaeological excavations, donations, pieces in disuse and even recovered from fires. The building that houses them has rooms and incredible spaces such as the chapter house or the cloister, and spectacular views on the top floor. The entrance includes a visit to one of the few Romanesque civil buildings of which the refectory stands out. It also includes a visit to the Museum of the Collegiate of Sar, something distant but a good option for a walk where you can discover new sights and areas of the city beyond the historic area.

Benjamín Berdiales Fraga 4 years ago

Experiencia fantástica: A great success to complement the visit (morally obliged) to the Cathedral and the Portico de la Gloria with a didactic museum that explains very well the history of the temple and its avatars throughout history, with a large collection of fragments collected from archaeological investigations

Experiencia fantástica: Sensational!

Experiencia fantástica: The Cathedral Museum is located in Obradoiro square, on the right side of the Cathedral, on the left side there is the access instead to the Xelmírez palace, which is always part of the Museum complex, but which I would honestly leave out if you didn't have too much time available, even if by purchasing any ticket, access to the building is included. Tickets are as follows: Colección Permanente: price € 6 you can only access the Museum on four floors, the second floor where you enter the cloister is very interesting, with the tombstones of the prelates all around the perimeter and the Capilla de las Reliquias, with the tombs of the royals, in the room of the Library there is also a specimen of Botafumeiro for those who want to see it up close. It is also nice to go up to the third floor to access the balcony overlooking Obradoiro square Cubiertas de la Catedral: price 12 €, is a guided tour (in Spanish language) of approximately 50 minutes that starts from the palace of Xelmirez, passes through a small part of the grandstand, and then climbs to the top on the roof of the Cathedral. The tour is very interesting because it explains many things about the Cathedral and allows you to have a magnificent view of the city from above, as well as of the various towers. The entrance is guided in groups of up to 25 people, you must book at the desired time, as it is very popular it could happen that you can only access it the next day. Grandstand: price € 10, it is an elevated corridor that runs along the internal perimeter of the cathedral, thus allowing you to see the cathedral from another perspective, always guided tour in groups of up to 12 people, even here you have to book. Excavaciones arqueológicas: price € 10, guided tour in the underground of the cathedral, which offers an intricate network of necropolises that followed one another before the construction of the Cathedral, as well as some remains of the basilica and part of the first defensive circle of the city Pazo de Xelmirez: it is free by buying any of the tickets mentioned above, it is an ancient 12th century Romanesque building that is now used as a hall for temporary exhibitions by the Museum, therefore always related to the theme. Inside there are also some remains of the Cathedral and the Portico della Gloria which were destroyed during the various phases of modification of the temple. Portico della Gloria: unfortunately it is not accessible again at the moment

Experiencia fantástica: The museum provides excellent background information about the construction and history of the cathedral. It also showcases the cathedral's extensive collection of art, historical items, and liturgical objects. Pilgrims can get discounted tickets. If you do not speak Spanish make sure to pick up an audio guide as almost all explanations are available only in Spanish/Galician. Once you finish the tour of the cathedral and museum, you can also proceed to another section of the cathedral museum, which tells the story of the ongoing restauration works. The entrance is on the other side of the Porta de la Gloria. Unfortunately, nearly all explanations are again only available in Spanish/Galician and no audio guide is available for this section. However, you can just use your ticket from the main museum for this section as well.

Experiencia fantástica: It is a museum where you can see the corridor inside. It is quite large and has a meeting room and a library. There is no Japanese earphone guide, so we recommend that you buy a Japanese guidebook at the souvenir shop first before going around.

Experiencia fantástica: Museum full of history and treasures. You can also look around hidden side of the cathedral and look down the plaza from its balcony. If you are a big fan of Santiago or a pilgrim, you must visit this place. Entrance fee is 6€ and for pilgrims/students 4€.
