Experiencia fantástica: Six of us. Four kids two adults. Over three floors. Nice rear outdoor space. Small cafe didn't use. A good display of Portsmouth history and social change. Some. Great Sherlock Holmes Sir Arthur Conan Doyle brilliant. Plus it's free. Parking possible but maybe expect to use off Street so have change ready. Good gift shop too

Experiencia fantástica: Considering this place is free, easily one of the best museums for miles. To start with, the building itself is beautiful. The Victorian style is similar to the National History Museum in London and is very impressive. The staff are incredibly helpful. The Sherlock Holmes museum was my main focus and it had a huge range of detailed exhibits. The modern art exhibits were impressive as well. It was really interesting following the museum through and seeing the Portsmouth homes through the ages. A lovely place to visit. Probably minimum of one hour but ideally 2-3 hours to see everything.

Experiencia fantástica: Such a gem in our local area, housing so much history and culture under one roof. If you have time and curiosity I recommend giving this place a visit. Donating if you have the capacity to will help keep this important museum open and accessible for all

Experiencia fantástica: Portsmouth Museum is a great place to visit, whether you are visiting the area or already live here. The exhibitions are well laid out and show what life was like in Portsmouth through different years. The exhibition about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is really interesting and there is a good amount of memorabilia of the 1950's. The current Silver exhibition and beautiful artworks of Portsmouth are lovely too.

Experiencia fantástica: Portsmouth Museum and Art Gallery is housed in a Grade II listed building, which was previously a part of Clarence and Victoria barracks (already demolished apart of the Museum's building) The museum includes a display on the author Arthur Conan Doyle and his fictional creation, the detective Sherlock Holmes. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Collection is one of the most wide-ranging in the world. It includes first editions of books, related letters, film and television memorabilia. Also there is a lovely cafe to visit at the end of the museum tour

Experiencia fantástica: Splendid city and regional museum that shows over 500 years of city history from nautical, silversmithing, and even saxon artefacts. The museum has a special exhibit on all things Sherlock Holmes and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and shows the Pompey pride. There is no charge for admission and the museum operates on donations and a bit of National Lottery funding. Well worth a visit - especially if you like Sherlock Holmes, silversmithing, or are interested in what every day life was like in the 1700s, 1800s, and 1900s.

Experiencia fantástica: I love this museum. Its so quirky and the building is beautiful. The Arthur Conan Doyle exhibit is fascinating and the different gallery installations are a great way of learning about new and modern local artists. I always learn something new in the Portsmouth history section too. The staff are friendly, and have a sense of humour about the constant cleaning etc due to Covid. The sea pollution installation was innovative and has stuck with me - I want to find a way of making it mobile to share with my beachschool students. It's a lovely, peaceful, free experience in Portsmouth.

Experiencia fantástica: I love its interactivity. Great for people of all ages, I loved that whilst I was visiting and elderly couple also were who then told me how they remembered some of these. I also loved the gaming room upstairs with retro games. Free to enter, the room on the right downstairs is a changing exhibition

Experiencia fantástica: Took the kids along to see the old TV games consoles, and they had an enjoyable few hours immersed in retro entertainment. Before that there was the children's TV exhibition, which didn't capture their imagination as much. The other exhibits seem to hardly, if at all, change which, for my kids anyway, means being nearly ignored in their haste to see the new exhibition.

Experiencia fantástica: Quaint little place with not all parts open due to Covid. Sensible and knowledgeable staff. Good display of Sherlock Holmes and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle pieces plus local history as well. We stopped on route to Ferry and found this place to kill time and thoroughly enjoyed it. Well worth a visit and parking on street directly outside it.

Experiencia fantástica: I love this museum just because it's amazing to see all the local history. Especially as its all things that are recognisable as a local. The Sherlock Holmes exhibition was fascinating but my favourite is the old arcade machines on the first floor. Very much worth a visit for an hour or two

Experiencia fantástica: Actually less information about Portsmouth than I expected, but enjoyed the Sherlock Holmes section. Had no idea of its connections the city. The "art" was not for me, would rather have seen some more sections on the cities history, but the recreated rooms and photos/videos of days gone by were interesting. Certainly worth a visit.

Maria Santos 5 years ago

Experiencia fantástica: Had such a great time there! It's certainly a must see in portsmouth! There's a section where you can see how people used to live in the past in portsmouth, so interesting and interactive, make sure you bring 20p, 10p and 5p coins with you because you're going to need it to use in some old game machines, me and my fiancé had a really fun time! Hahaha don't forget to go upstairs and check the game over section, really amazing!!!
